Unit 2 Deer

Hello Fellow MM members.

I have enjoyed this sight for several years and have found it a great way to stay connected to the west and what is happening in some of the States that I travel to each fall to hunt. I am a do it yourself hunter and have been extremely fortunate to chase Deer, Antelope and Elk somewhere in the west for the past 28 years. Bow or rifle has never mattered to me since I have found the weapon that I carry is only a small part of the hunt. Like many of you I have played the point game for several years and have now decided to start cashing in points.

This Spring my hunting buddy and I failed to draw Elk tags in Wyoming but were fortunate to draw two of the three Unit 2 NR 2nd season rifle tags with 22 points. I have been researching the area for a couple years and have some good starting areas to look over but have a few questions about the Unit.

For those of you that have hunted it or are familiar with it would you recommend camping in or commuting to the Unit while hunting? From what I been told and from what I remember from being there nearly 15 years ago it is desolate so finding a place to stay may be difficult if not even existent. Camping works for us if that is what we need to do but just wanted to check and see what might be available.

Is there much movement of animals in the Unit or are most of the Deer residents of the Unit? From what I can tell it appears that is the case but for some of you more familar with Unit 2 I would like to hear your thoughts.

I will be traveling from Wisconsin to be in the area the first week of July to become more familiar with the area and develop a plan for our fall hunt. I realize that it may not be the best time to scout but it is what I can make work for getting a way.

For any one with a tag (Deer, Elk, Antelope) for the Unit that may be there before are season I would be happy to hear from you and share what I will learn between now and then and for any one that will be there during or after I would be happy to help as well.

I appreciate any insight that any of you may have on Unit 2 and wish all of you good luck this fall!

The unit is desolate. Closets accommodations would be maybell which is a pretty good drive. Camping in the unit is the only way to go. And make sure to bring extra fuel out with you. The days of getting fuel at browns park store are over. As far as the deer hunting goes, deer densities are low but there are a handful of good bucks to be had. Majority of the deer will be on Douglas Mountain. It has always amazed me what it takes to draw unit 2 for deer for what it is. Your welcome to PM me and I can help you with camping locations, spots, etc...

Thank you Coloradoboy.

I have followed your posts for a while and appreciate your willingness to help out.

As soon as I figure out how to send a P.M. I will reach out to you with some more specific questions.

Thank you again!------63Badger

Thank you buckhunter64 for replying. I will give you a call in the next couple of days to talk more. Please let me know if there is a time that is better than another.

There?s a landowner west of Maybell that has a lodge he rents out. If you're interested in contacting him send me a pm and I will get you his information.

Douglas mountain has the higher densities of deer, but the big deer that I have found out there have been in the far out reaches of the unit to the north. There?s very few deer in those areas, but with some work you can turn up a tank.
There?s a lot of private & outfitters in the Douglas mountain area so you definitely wanna know where you're at. You should be able to turn up 160-170 type deer.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information. I will send you a P.M. In the next day or two with some specific questions. I am looking back over my notes and maps that I have marked up over the past couple of years to make sure I am asking the right questions.

Appreciative of the help!----------63Badger
