activities around unit 61

I finally drew a 61 archery elk tag. I am thinking about taking the family on a little vacation towards the end of July to check it out. Besides spending some time on 61, what are some other places we could visit while there. We are thinking about taking the train one day from Durango to Silverton, maybe hit Mesa Verde on the way in or out, but we have been there before. Thought about visiting Ouray, and maybe taking a ATV to the top of the pass. We will be coming from Utah, probably come in through Grand Junction, and head back out through Cortez. Any other ideas on things we could do as a family while in the area? Any places on 61 I for sure need to look at? Thank you

LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-19 AT 05:23PM (MST)[p]Depending on how long you have to fool around; Colorado NM, Lands End Road (up to Grand Mesa), Dinosaur NM (Utah) are all not too far from there. To do Dinosaur, add about two days in the beginning of your trip to get up there and then drive over and down to Grand Junction. Do the Colorado NM and Grand Mesa in that area if you wish and then south through the Uncompahgre. You can also hit Moab area and Arches NP without too much difficulty (other than time). So much to do within a day's drive of Grand Junction!

I highly recommend visiting The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It is 13 miles North of Montrose. It's worth a few hours.

Of all the touristy things to do around Durango the train is the coolest and well worth doing. Wear good sunglasses if you get an open car. Of course Moab is a zoo this time of year if you are into that kind of thing...

The other thing that is all the rage this year is rafting ("epic" they say). I can't reccomend anyone, but I'm sure there a bunch out there. Some will say its getting late in the season, but I prefer my rafting without giant logs and cars floating by:)

May you live long enough to cash in those preference points. Amen

Ditto Bean Man.

Also, the fishing in Miramonte Reservoir is outstanding! It is about 25 miles south of Norwood. Further south is Groundhog. Some monster 'bows/browns there. Can be windy, though.

Do the train ride, but don't wear good clothes!!!!!! PC

Be sure to hit the Ouray hot springs but make sure the temperature is hot enough the day you go as it tends to fluctuate. Black Canyon is also worth a look. Those are our favorite places to bring our guests who visit Montrose.
