Antelope Mounts

Hello all,

I was hoping some of you may have some experience with Antelope mounts. I just picked mine and my buddies mounts up this morning and it seems the hair just falls out with a light swipe like petting a dog. Is this normal. Mine isn't so bad but my buddies is really shedding.

The taxidermist said that since antelope have hollow hair, it's not unusual for hair to fall out pretty easy but did agree that my buddies was excessive.

Any advice?

I don't usually pet my antelope mount, but I just did :D Anyway, hair didn't fall out. I even gave it a light tug in a couple of places and nothing. It's about 10-12 years old and I've never noticed it shedding.

Don't know what else to tell you.

I have 2 antelope mounts. 1 the hair is brittle and the other is soft. None of the hair just falls out. Have heard horror stories about taxidermist using their own brine solution to pickle the skins instead of sending them to a tannery. Those customers told of hair just falling out. I made sure my guy sent the skins off to be tanned. The nice thing about antelope is you can usually get a new cape!

The hair should not be falling out at this stage, I have four hanging on the wall and none are shedding. Think you might have a problem.

Yea that shouldn't be happening. Please post the name of the jokers that did the work so nobody else, here, runs into that.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I wont post his name. He has done multiple mounts for my buddy and I over the years with zero issues.

He called my buddy yesterday just to check in because he wasn't at the shop when I picked it up but I told the guy there there could be a problem. He made a point to tell us we have nothing to worry about because he will take care of us. He said he would get new capes if it came down to it. Solid dude, does good work. this is the first issue and customer service seems to be top notch.

It's fairly common for hair slippage on antelope. Before and after mounting. I have 5 antelope mounts and they all shed when I'm cleaning them. Mildly, but nonetheless there is definitely some slippage. I take extra car when cleaning the antelope and don't wipe quite as hard as I do my other mounts. Slippage begins as soon as that buck dies! The longer you wait to get the hide taken care of, the worse it gets. Good on your taxi to stand behind his work!

I disagree that shedding or slippage on good taxidermy is "fairly common" Antelope hair is more fragile than most species. However, it shouldn't "shed" or fall out on its own. It sounds to me like you have a taxidermy issue. I have 4 Antelope mounts and I've never experienced anything like you're describing. Its too bad and I hope there is something that can be done. Most likely new capes though.

Not always the fault of the taxidermist or the tannery. Most Antelope are taken in very hot weather and if not skinned, cooled and on ice quick your cape can and will begin to rot, turn green and start to slip. Once bacteria kicks in and starts to slip a raw cape no magic wand from the taxidermist or the tannery will stop it.
