To preface, we suck at turkey hunting. The youth season opened yesterday, but, Zach had basketball games so we went out this morning.
The wind was blowing terribly again (10 days in a row) and our first set was a bust. No turkeys even talking in their roosts.
On our way out we drive Kevin spots 7-8 hens and a big gobbler. Zach jumps out of the truck and Kevin and I are waiting for a shot. Instead we find Zach with a jammed shotgun. This was starting to look like all of our turkey hunts.
15 minutes later we see a group of hens but no gobbler.
Then we had given up because of the wind and were just driving around and I saw a lone gobbler. Kevin slows down and I look back and Zach had opened the door of the truck and fell out sprawled on the ground. Before you know it he was up and running in the direction of the gobbler. Kevin and I are watching him disappear, hear a shot and Zach yelling. First gobbler on the ground.
We double checked his tags to make sure he had both and headed home. Sure enough another flock. Zach jumps out with out falling and follows them into the trees. Another shot and his second tag filled.
Pretty good for us. Now next weekend I will give it a try.
I know for you turkey purists they should be called in, but, with the wind this morning not a whole lot of calling would work, and it was a blast. Zach got the turkey monkey off his back.
To make it even better Khart was able to join us for what may be his last hunt with us for awhile. Hoping he is still with us for my July off range oryx.
