I realize that this may be a bit of a longshot, but I thought I would give it a try. I have the points as a NR to draw a unit 61 elk tag next year. Being a NR, I obviously can't hunt the wilderness area alone without a resident to accompany me.

I didnt know if any folks here who are residents are planning on hunting this unit next year, and also willing to allow a NR to tag along.

Application period isnt really that far off, so I thought I would throw it out here to see if I get any nibbles. Please PM me if interested.

If you do hook up with a resident I would make sure the resident or you brings an electric bear fence for camp. The grizzlies are bad, you also need horses as you probably know. I'm a nonresident so I can't help you out but I hunted it in 2012.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-30-13 AT 03:51PM (MST)[p]I am in the exact same situation. Im a montana resident but want to do the same hunt next year in 61 and have all my own horses and camp setup. I dont have a resident guide yet. If your interested in talking let me know.

Why? Maybe I misunderstand the rules, but I was thinking I as a NR could draw seperately from a resident, or anybody else for that matter. As long as I hunt with a resident, why would we have to apply together? If i understand correctly, I could actually hunt with just a friend who lives in WY even if he doesnt have a tag. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Im not opposed to applying as a party app, but just didnt think I needed to.

MY bad, only if the resident wanted to hunt to. But yes you are CORRECT.

Not sure if you wanted a resident to hunt also with you

Its kind of a gamble to ask a resident to join up with you on a limited quota hunt. Let's say someone does say yes, so you put in and draw. If the resident doesn't draw his license, you've got a tag in hand and no one to hunt with. I've hunted 61 and can't imagine a resident would want to take someone in on that kind of hunt without a license and no compensation...

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-13 AT 03:03PM (MST)[p]I appreciate all the dialogue. Its why I posted early so that I could hear all the comments from the WY folks.

I was hoping for someone that was more or less guaranteed to draw the hunt. At 6 NR points, I am looking pretty good to draw. Im sure there are residents that are in the same boat that could apply with strong confidence they will draw.

My back up plan is to go with Bob Sundeen. Im not really big into guided hunts, but WY forces your hand if you want to hunt wilderness.

Like I said in my original post, I knew this may be a bit of a longshot, but its worth a shot. If a resident is planning on hunting 61 next year, and doesnt mind a NR tagging along, I would love to chat with them. I know there must be a couple on this site :)

FYI, residents do not have preference points. Draw success for Area 61 elk was about 40% for 2013.

OK, didnt know that, I feel stupid now. Some of the other responses make more sense. Appreciate it.

Maybe rent a Wyoming Hooker for a week, That should be cheaper right LOL.
