La Panza Elk Hunt

My wife also drew, be glad to keep you informed of what we learn and we will see you at the orientation, congrats

congrats! My dad drew the hunt a while back. The ranch we hunted went to PLM a couple of years later, unfortunately. the public land part of the unit is WIDE OPEN. I remember the elk just hanging out on the other side of the fence. I would not bet on making it happen on the public land area. Call around and pay a trespass fee.

I really wish they would draw the hunters that can hunt the dfg ranch BEFORE the orientation so everyone can plan accordingly.

I have not had that tag, but have spent a lot of time in the public areas such as tembler mtn. high mtn.the forest land along hyw 58 and of hwy166 were the forest land boarders the chiminaes dfg land, and have run into elk in every location, just last year while quail hunting I jumped 8 bulls near high mtn. have I seen them in those areas consistently , no. that unit goes all the way to king city and over to the 5, and a couple years ago I saw about 80 head with bulls 200 yards from the 5 north of coaling. from the public land available to you, your not going to see it all unless you fly it. I would also contact a man at the sporting good store in paso robles that lives in parkfield, I had talked to him about 5 or 6 years ago and he said to get with him if you had a tag.the chiminaes is going to be the easiest but not the best. good luck

Not everyone can get on the Chimineas though....its not fully accessible, right? I would contact F and G about that. I believe its a "draw" to get on the land.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

The evening before your hunt at your mandatory orientation there in a bowl with 5 envelopes in it. 2 of those envelopes contain chimineas inside. Those 2 who are lucky enough to choose that envelope will be able to hunt to ranch. Hunting on the ranch is more like shopping. The elk aren't as spooked as the herd that lives down by ?Painted Rock? and Soda Lake. It took a few days and stalks to figure out their patterns. By no means a easy hunt. With virtually no vegetation and little terrain to use it becomes a challenge. The elk in that area use that feature to their advantage. They see you they just walk out of your range in plain site. I was happy and satisfied with my hunt. I shot a bull elk in California, DIY, and on BLM ground and 2 hours from my house.

I would get in your truck and start looking for ranchers working where you know there are bulls, tell them you have a tag, and quite a few of them will beg you to take one off their property. I've spoken to a few of them over the years and they hate the elk because they eat lots of cattle feed and they can't get landowner tags to harvest them because most ranchers don't have enough acreage to be eligible for them. They only cost them money, so they will light up when you tell them you can help their free grazing problem a little. Good luck!
