Woooohooo, another year has come and gone and there were plenty of big bucks and bulls that hit the ground. We were fortunate to see a few of those giants at the Watering Holes Big Buck and Bull contest in Spring Creek. There were many great bucks in the contest that anybody would be happy to put a tag on and then there were some really special bucks that ran away with the prizes. First off I'd like to thank Jack and Kenda Constable and my wife Janarae Edwards all Co-owners of the Watering Hole for putting on such an event. Many locals look forward to this occasion every year and I'm probably one of the biggest fans. Second, I'd like to thank all of our sponsors new and old for helping us put on this event. Without you it would not be possible. Thirdly, due to the large number of entries our contest only measures a box score because if we tried to measure Boone and Crockett we would be there measuring for a week straight. Box score means that we take the width and add it to the height, count up the points and add everything together to get our score per individual animal. Many times in this system a buck that would score highly in Boone and Crocket measurements will loose to a lesser buck. So you never know who is actually going to win.
So lets look at some pictures. This young man named Zack Freeman won the youth category with this great buck and recieved a Weatherby Vanguard 243 for his efforts. Look at how those main beams turn down.
4466097.jpg

Second place youth was taken by Travis Long with this beautiful buck.
142095.jpg

Third place was taken by David Collins with a true 7x7 which is something you don't see very often. Davids twinn brother also took a very nice buck this year. These boys are gonna put a hurtin' on the big buck population when they get old enough to hunt on thier owne.
162094.jpg

Next we'll go to the archery category which was taken by Josh Cadwell. Josh won a new bow, and the Big Buck mug which entitles him to free beer for one full year until the next contest. Jerome Semper was last years winner and had the honor of presenting the "crown" mug to Josh. You can see in the picture Jerome with his last mug of beer. I thought Jerome was gonna cry over loosing the free beer, ha ha. Congrats to you Josh on a great buck. Josh is in the middle and Jack Constable is the guy presenting Josh with his new bow while Jerome is the big Basqo holding his LAST free beer.
2175077.jpg

Second place archery goes to Roger Dutton with another great buck. This guy is always associated with big bucks and bulls and is a great guy to talk hunting with.
5798080.jpg

Third place archery was won by Jim Algerio. Jim also is another person who is always killing or is associated with big animals. In addition, Jim is a very big archery fanatic and has helped countless people get into bow hunting. Thanks Jim for all you do for the world of bowhunting.
4706076.jpg

Next we move on to the rifle category. Prepare to have your eyes fall out of your head because the first place winner, Ken Bowler, put away one of the biggest Nevada bucks taken in years. The picture says more than I could ever say. The man holding the buck and accepting Ken's prize is named Leon and is Kens good friend. Ken was unable to make the event but Leon was gracious enough to bring in the rack and endure constant questioning about the buck. I'm sorry that I didn't get your last name Leon but thanks to you and Ken for sharing this great trophy. Ken will recieve the Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 that Leon is holding in the picture.
9318075.jpg

Second place winner in the rifle category was Matt Murry with this sweet buck!
8102071.jpg

Rifle third place winner was Greg Welch with another Nevada great!
4184070.jpg

We also gave a prize to the lady with the largest buck. Here we have Kathy Langdon with a buck that measures in the high 170's.
This by the way is Kathy's first buck. I can't wait to see how she follows up with her next buck!
4348072.jpg

We also like to give a prize to the youth with the smallest buck. This encourages everybody to bring thier bucks no matter how small or large it is and that having the biggest buck is not all that matters but each and every animal harvested is a true trophy. Here is Seth Alzugaray accepting his prize for the smallest youth buck. The smile on Seth's face made the whole contest worth while. Look at the smiles on the faces of the people behind Seth. Its funny how a kid's smile makes us all smile.
1469090.jpg

Next is the smallest buck taken by an adult. This winner recieves a mug to get free beer for a whole year also. The only difference is that his mug is small, ha ha. Congratulations to Robbie Hood who purposely went out to harvest the smallest buck in order to recieve this prize. This guy is a great conisuer of beer and will definitely put his mug to good use. Too bad he has a bad choice in clothing. The Steelers?
9752098.jpg

That concludes all of the winners of the Big Buck part of the contest. I wish I could post pictures of every single buck that was brought in because there was definitely many more awesome bucks at the contest. Don't go away because I'm going to post pictures of the bulls and some Monster Muley people that were present. fatrooster.

KEEP THEM COMING BUDDY!!!!!! I know theres a good one of me in there some where! :)

These two guys showed up at the Watering Hole at 5:30am to fire up the grill and cook pulled pork and pork ribs. It is soooooo good!!!! My brother-in-law Kyle Lawhorn is wearing the green stocking beanie and Art Taylor aka "archerybug" here on MM is wearing the San Diego Charger hat. Art, can't to pick a better team than the Chargers to root for? Ha ha.

Shon Marcial, NVMDF on MM, brought a pair of sheds to share with us, and to make us all drool and slobber over. Shon says they measure up into the 230" range. I slobbered on them so much that I dang near passed out from dehydration. Luckily I was at a bar and was able to rehydrate with a beverage or two, lol.

These are some of the ladies that helped us serve up the grub.

Shon Marcial and friends chowing down on the grub. I apologize but I forgot the MM name of the guy holding up the antler. Feel free to tell us who you are. Thanks Shon for bringing in your sheds.

Here is a photo with Josh Cadwell holding his archery buck, his girlfriend holding his oldest sons antlers and his younger son holding his antlers. All nice bucks. What does that tell you about Josh's hunting abilities?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-10 AT 11:44PM (MST)[p]There thats better. The camera man did a dang good job! BIG BULLS! BIG BULLS! BIG BULLS! BIG BULLS!

("For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9")

So lets move on to the Big Bull category. Here's a funny story. Several months ago, Gregg Faux was sitting at the bar after drinking quite a few drinks and Kenda Constable talked him into buying a Big Bull ticket and enter our contest which he did. Greg kills a giant bull scoring around 392" but forgot that he had bought a ticket for the contest. Did I mention that he had drank a few beers? Kenda informs him that he did indeed buy a ticket but is now worried because she has a late rifle bull tag and Gregg is now her biggest competition. Kenda kills a 385" bull but because we do not use Boone and Crockett measurements it is unclear as to who is going to win. Jack, who is Kenda's husband and the person putting on the contest, tells the people we have measuring to decide how they want to measure and they are not allowed to tell anybody, including Jack, thier method and they are to make it as fair as possible. The measurers decide that our traditional method of a box score is the only way to keep things fair due to the fact that this is how we've always done it. Nobody know's how the measuring will be done so nobody knows who will win but everybody is certain that Gregg or Kenda will win the contest and will barely win it by a hair. The day of the contest Gregg and Kenda are sitting at the bar comtemplating(arguing) about who is gonna win when a guy from Reno walks in carrying a giant bull elk rack. Gregg and Kenda quietly watch him carry his rack through the bar and out to the measuring tent. After he was gone they started arguing about who would win second place, ha ha.
Here is that first place winning bull taken by Quinton Jones who lives in Reno. The bull was taken South of Ely and measures somewhere in the area of 416" gross. Congratulations Quinton on a fantastic bull and upsetting the competition, lol.
8134085.jpg

Another angle of Quinton's bull.
8402024.jpg

Kenda's bull took second barely beating Gregg by 2\16's of an inch. All three bulls were so close that the prizes were split up between the three contestants.
Here is Gregg's bull. Gregg was awarded the Big Bull all you can drink beer mug good for one year, Kenda won the rifle and Quinton won a free head mount which he sold to Gregg because Quinton had already turned his hide over to his taxidermist in Reno.
5285082.jpg

Here is a picture of all of the Big Bull contestants. Every one of them had a bull to be proud of. I'd like to add that the gentleman in the red shirt, Al Padilla, had a bull whose rack was very semmetrical and was one of the prettiest bulls I've ever seen and measured in the 370's. Congrats to all of the contestants.

Awesome pics Drew!!! It was a blast as always, I already can't wait until next year. Drew this is my MM name.

Brandon Elegante

Sorry for forgetting Brandon. I've been on the computer so long tonight that I'm seeing double and forgetting my name, lol.
ELKOHUNTER, thanks for helping us out along with Recurveman. The measurers told me that you two were a great big help! fatrooster.

I've been checking all the time the last 2 nights to see if you had them up yet, I'll bet it took a while. Thank you for taking the time to post them up along with the stories, I think everyone really enjoys your posts.

THANKS FOR THE PICS DREW, THAT WAS GREAT.......MAKES ME WANT TO BE THERE.....THE SUDS ARE RIGHT DOWN MY ALLEY. MAYBE I GET DRAWN IN 2011........MERRY CHRISTMAS.........YD.

I was able to make it this year and had a great time and saw alot of great deer and elk. But what happened to my friend was total bs. He won the big bull contest and it wasnt even close (117 to 111 by their scoring system) All the other winners in the the big buck contest win a free mount and a rifle. Some how they change the rules after my friend shows up with his bull and he won a free mount and not the rifle it went to second place which I am sure the second place buck winner would've loved to got for his prize. And what makes it even worse is the second place winner happens to be a owner of the bar and is putting on the contest. If they were going to split the prizes (which they shouln't have in the first place) first place should have choice of what they wanted.

Another thing I noticed is when they were giving out the awards they keep saying it is about the kids but they only have one catagory for them and two for the adults (archery / muzz rifle).
I think they should have an archery catagory for the juniors since the way NV junior tags work they can hunt all three seasons and for one of them to get one with a bow it shouldn't be up against the rifle and muzzleloader deer.

Banty Rooster....you spelled Shon's last name wrong but too late to change it now as I just now seen this post. Maybe Shon won't care...LOL
Looks like a great time was had by all and dang I need to make next years to just be there and see the "BONES".

Great pics! Cool to see so many nice bucks. AND.....the guy wearing the Steelers sweatshirt obviously is the TRUE sportsman for taking the lesser bucks out of the gene pool. Go Steelers!
Frickin' Ravens got lucky last night BTW!

Steve
I got put in time out for a bad signature! Sorry Founder...

nvnative has a very good point. If what he says is true, somebody seems to be sliding loot under the table at that event.

"loot under the table" huh? Well maybe you guys should tell the people that are running the show to change a few things. And also show up. Just sayin. I had a very good time. It was cool to be able to see that meny big bucks and bulls in one place.

("For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9")

Thanks for sharing the contest with us. How far is Spring Creek from Vegas? :)Looks like a great time.

Thanks, Drew, and all the people that put on Big buck contest. It's always nice to see the big bucks for the year. It doesn't matter if you can't be there, it's just nice of you guys to post all the pics for everyone to see. And there sure were some dandy's.

Thanks

Brownie

You guys put on a great contest. Thanks for the prizes, Craig Walsh NOT GREG WELCH. I will be donating to the contest next year. Is robbie drinking you dry?

Thanks Drew! We had a great time and seen some monsters! You know you want to go camping!!

I just got off the phone with Quentin and he told me Jack called him and apologized for what when on that night. Quentin will be getting the prizes that he won that night.

I wish I could have made it up for that. My dad "archerybug" kept telling us about it and tried to get us to drive up from socal for this event. a little far. It's funny that you said those guys were there at 5:30 to start cooking....i got a call about the same time when i was sound asleep.. "hey, were at the bar grillin".

He should have brought my monster buck and maybe could have beat out that steeler lover Robbie for that year of free beer. That does sound like something robbie would do to get free beer for a year.

Maybe next year!!

That guy was dressed like that on Thanksgiving weekend shoveling snow in 19 below 0 temperstures. He's crazy! Later that day he came over to my house for Thanksgiving dinner and drank too much. Hee hee, gotcha Art!
4569003.jpg

Kinda curious how my wife didn't win the biggest deer by a woman when she had the fourth biggest deer there? Wasn't there as we were out of town and sent her horns with someone else. Doesn't matter but just seen these and wondering? I never enter these things but she wanted to just for fun.

most likly it was becuse of how they have to score the deer. They do a "box score" not a gross score. It saves on time and makes it alittle more interresting.

("For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9")

She won 4th place as the box score. Sounds to me like she should have won the women 1st place.

Well I'm not sure what I'm missing. But I watched almost all of the racks get scored. And why would they fix the scores? So if it was me I would say she lost fair and square and move on to next year.

("For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9")

bearman, I can assure you that if her box score was the best out of all the other womens then she would have won. I know the guys that did the scoring eapecially the one in charge of it and he is square as can be. We purposely took the scoring out of our hands and put it into someone elses so that we would not be questioned. Nevertheless I will look into it and get back to you. Or if you prefer you could talk to Jack at wrestling practice.
Also, I heard that you scored Josh's archery buck. 218" gross score which was more than I thought he'd end up scoring. He is probably one of my personal favorite Nevada bucks of all time.
Wish you could've made it to the contest. I would've liked to get a green score on Kenda's bull. I've got someone on another website questioning its score so I wanted to set the record straight. Maybe you could score it another time. fatrooster.

Tonight I met with Roger Dutton who is the Father of Brendon Williams, who placed 4th in the youth division. Roger accepted the prize of $100.00 for his son Brendon. Thanks Roger for entering and for your support. And thankyou also for your offer to help us out in next years contest. fatrooster.

You guys miss understood me I was not saying anyone did anything wrong or corrupt. Fatrooster thanks for the score sheet that clears things up and I like to see what they all score for curiosity. Jack had told me Sis was tied for fourth. He must have been confused on her score. Once again I was not saying anyone did anything wrong. Just wondering. I will put a tape on Kendra's soon and let you know. The Sci score on the double drop tine buck is 218 6/8. Awesome buck, I would have not guessed that high as it is a three by four frame. If you know of any others that need scored give me a call.

Fatrooster, you should see the score sheet on the winner of the contest. I would love to see this contest go to official score. The top one would have still won but the others would not have. Also having non-typical going against typical is not to fair. But Jack said he thinks this would take way to much time with all the entries. I have never went but I guess next year I will have to go see the event.

bearman, you are 100% correct about nontypicals beating out typicals even when the typical is a better scoring buck. As you said, time is the reason why we have to do box score. Too many entries for B and C measurement. I just got all of the score sheets from Jack last night and I counted 52 entries. A lot of those entries do not bring in thier antlers until 11:00 to 12:00 with 12:00 being the deadline. The measurers are really gittin with it to get them scored up. Also, if we went to B and C measurements and somebody already had thiers previously measured by a different official scorer and your measurement came up different all hell would break loose. Especially if they lost by anything less than 3 inches.
Don't worry about asking questions about the scoring. I didn't feel attacked by your questions and am happy to answer them the best I can.
Anyways, glad to hear your ideas and input. fatrooster.

Ya I'm sure it would be time consuming to do anything different. I'm sure there would be people who complain no matter how it was scored. You have to do the best you can.

Drew if we had a panel of guys scoreing deer could we do a B&C score system? I know that I would give my time scoreing and im sure that Shon Marshall would also do it. Im sure we could get ten qualified guys to do it and people could watch us score while they drink?

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p248/nv_hunter/nevadaanimatedhelmetwd2.gif[/IMG]

Abe, I don't know if its doable but we'll definitely talk it over. Not a bad idea. Either way, I might be recruiting you no matter what we decide to do, lol. fatrooster.

fatrooster, I am willing to help out next year if you need anything...If you take me to your best shed hunting areas!! hahaha

Ted, your shed hunting areas make my shed hunting areas look like childs play, ha ha. I'm planning on going on that elk shed hunt we talked about in late June early July. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for volunteering to help out in the contest. I'll keep you posted on that too. fatrooster.

Here are a couple of more miscellaneous pictures from the contest.
The kids get to take over the pool table during the contest. Future pool sharks!

This young man was holding up somebodies elk antlers and we had a hell of a time getting him to smile for the camera, lol.

This very young man is showing off his new hoody sweatshirt. By the way, all youth entries that show up to the contest get a free Big Buck Watering Hole hoody sweatshirt.

Heres another picture of Al with a buck he entered in last years contest in the archery category. I think he placed third.

Again, I can't thank Al Harris of Rack Em Up Taxidermy and Gary Powell of North Slope Taxidermy enough for thier contributions to the contest. Both of these guys have gone above and beyond.

Drew I mentioned to Founder about coming out next year to help us score if you go that route and he said he would love to go if he can!

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p248/nv_hunter/nevadaanimatedhelmetwd2.gif[/IMG]

Drew, I will be there next year for sure to score them officially or box what ever you guys need. I can get plenty of help for scoring and over see them.

Drew,

Why not just score the big side of each rack and add the inside spread? A good buck would be 100- 105" 80" side, and 20 - 25" inside spread.

NVMDF

How about a big tank of water and the buck that displaces the most water wins? haah

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p248/nv_hunter/nevadaanimatedhelmetwd2.gif[/IMG]

How about, being happy that the Watering Hole has a Big Buck Contest next year. Who cares how the score them? It's just great to see everyone entering their bucks, and everyone having a great time.
There used to be lots of big buck contests around the western states, but now not to many. Mostly because everyone argued about the scoring system, or the Fish And Game discouraged the businesses from putting them on.
Let the Watering Hole do their contest just like they want to, and be happy to get to see all those big bucks, I think it's great.

Thanks, Brownie

brownie

Thank you! I was about to lose it! If you don't like it don't come! Besides fat is NOT in charge of it! Go talk to the head guy. If you don't like it put your own on next year! Ok I said what I wanted to only nicer!

Wow I never read that one person had a problem with it just offering to help or improve. I would like to say lots of thing to you right now but I'm going to stop myself. Not like me but after I relax about how you just came across, I will write more.

Its not the best system but its better than no contest. I entered the big buck contest at taylor canyon just for fun. I knew the buck I shot was too narrow to win, even though he scores close to 190, but I took him over any way. It was fun to share with the guys, get a picture taken, eat a burger and drink some beers!

Sorry guys about not answering sooner. I'm in Florida visiting my family and haven't been able to get to a computer due to traveling throughout Florida and Georgia visiting other relatives.
Thanks to everybody for your concern and offers to help out. It pleases me to see you guys offering your help and I greatly appreciate it. ELKOHUNTER, maybe we should change your name to BANTYROOSTER instead of people calling ME Bantyrooster, ha ha. I appreciate you taking up for us at the Watering Hole but its not necessary. At this point I don't think anybody is upset about the contest but are just offering ideas. I know that you don't mean anybody any harm but please don't get in a squabble over me. I'm a big boy and can handle myself. But thanks, thanks thanks!
NV_Hunter, I'd love to have you and Founder come over and help out, or just come over for the day. Either way, I'd like to have you both there.
bearman, I'm looking forward to meeting you and having your help. I don't think ELKOBANTYHUNTER was talking to you but to people in general who are complaining, which you weren't. Thanks for keeping in touch and for your feedback.
Again, thanks to all for your support and good luck in the draw. fatrooster.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-11 AT 11:13AM (MST)[p]You bet that is what it is about. I think everyone feels the same way. Some people was just offering to help make it better. In the end Jack will do with it as he wishes. When I was a kid in Elko they had a big buck contest at the Commercial and it was on the weight of the body not horns. The owners of the Watering Hole are doing a great thing making this a family event. How ever they move forward I'm sure it will be great. Thanks Drew I know I dont get on here very often. Have a good trip.

ELKOHUNTER I am hoping you weren't addressing me with your comment because I have never complained once about the contest. I offered an idea to Drew in order to possibly help. I myself was tired of seeing the contest get bashed and instead of firing back I decided to try and help solve the issues. If your comment was addressed at me then I expect that you will do a little research about how I treat people on this site and then I ask you treat me the same.
