I drew the McGregor Range unit 28 barbary tag for December 30-31st. If you've ever had this hunt I would appreciate it very much if you could give me some information on how the hunt went and what to expect.

If you're interested in a guide I know one that would put you on a slammer of a ram! Lots of big sheep on that unit but he has done unreal rams.

Thanks for the suggestion but no thanks! Were doing it DIY.

Is it DIY when you are asking for help? Serious question.

I asked for information on the hunt and what to expect from the people that have had this hunt, I didn't ask for honey holes or GPS coordinates.

If I were you, considering how short the season is, I would get your access badge early and try to take a couple weekends to scout if u can find some time where the range is open. That would allow u to get familiar early. A 2 day hunt is not the time to learn an area. You should have a good plan going in to maximize your time on the hunt.

This is a perfect situation where we come together as a hunting family and help this guy out as much as possible. Due to it being a military base, limited to scouting, and a 2 day hunt. I have never set foot on that area so I'm of no help but hopefully the guys who have hunted there can shed some light on what area would be best in order to be successful.

I couldn't agree more with Bowdeadly. In this case if I knew the area I would share all I know. Not as if there is any real chance of any of us drawing the tag at the same time so why not share. I wish I could help you out, but I have only driven by the area.

Put in for it every year but don't know anything because I don't draw it, I have an outfitter friend who guides a lot of ram hunts I'll see if he's ever been in there.

Thanks for the understanding everybody. I live about 6 1/2 hours from the hunting area so I won't be able to scout it as much as I'd like to, but I'm still going to scout it as much as possible. I don't know why some people feel a need to make rude comments like they've never asked for advice before, but I guess that's just MM.

Bowdeadly and Rabidrattler1, I agree 100%!

Great job to everyone with a positive attitude. It ALWAYS comes back to you 10 fold!

I would second what Ltsheets said--get your access badge early--depending on the crowds, that can sometimes take several hours, not to mention it's a 2-hour drive. I can give you info on where to not go. I've hunted the McG for oryx once and guided for oryx for a couple kids the following year, and I didn't see a single barbary on either of those hunts. Hopefully someone here has a better idea than me.

buckrush, shoot me a pm I'll try to help a little. I still have my maps from my oryx hunts and I talked with the guy that runs the hunts out there regarding the antelope, elk and Barbary hunts to see if I wanted to put in or not so he gave me some info I can pass along.

Idk how this post got resurrected but just seeing 12rinng’s comment makes me want to thank whoever brought it back from the dead ??

Just drew a December 2 day female/immature tag on the McGregor range. I'm planning to get down there and scout for at least a couple weekends.

Any general advice? I'm totally new to Barbary/Aoudad.

Typical shot range?
Spotting scope necessary?

Great hunt! We were in sheep the whole two days of the hunt. Most sheep hunts I’ve been on it hasn’t been too hard to get within 300 yards. A spotting scope would be nice to have but not absolutely necessary IMO. Only having two days sucked though!

I’ve shot one at 50, 360 and could’ve shot at 840 but passed for a variety of reasons. For a ewe I don’t think a spotter is all that necessary. Definitely not as necessary as extra water, gas and fix a flat:)

Right on. Thanks for the info!

Would you say it's pretty difficult to find them on the range? The fact that this is a two day hunt makes me hope it would not be terribly difficult. But definitely don't want to approach this with the wrong attitude and blow it. Didn't draw elk or deer, so hoping to put some sheep meat in the freezer.

They are not hard to find just stay in the sheep looking country. Go scout a weekend or two before hand and you shouldn’t have any problem finding sheep. You likely have to walk a bit to get to them, but I’ve seen them off the roads there too.

I hunted it one time and never saw a sheep. There was a blizzard both days though. From what i understand it’s one of the best units out there but you coulda fooled me.

The two days does make it challenging honestly. Not to add pressure but I shot mine in the last hour of hunting. Coupled with the fact you can’t really scout and you’ll have to have a sense of urgency!!

But, there are sheep in there so you should have some opportunities. Feel free to shoot me a DM and I can point you in a couple directions.
