Help with draw...

Been on the site a long time, finally registered. I’m looking for some big game draw input. I’m apply as NR with 4 points going for archery, and I’m just looking for a unit with decent deer numbers. I live in northern CA close to 021/015. Trying to stay close to home if possible and hopefully see some deer and have opportunities. Again not looking for specifics, or 180” bucks (although I’d be ok with that) just some input on some good choices. Thanks in advance.

The new NV website is challenging.

There is great group of people on here that will help you once the networking begins. The units you mentioned are good, just hard to draw late season tags.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. I know the late season hunts are tough to draw, and I’m not sure I’m going to apply for any late season hunts, just looking for a few solid options. Im leaning towards the units on the border, closer to home so I can scout more. Thanks again

Get lucky and draw 196 right out of Reno. It's not a secret and you probably won't draw it. I've been shed hunting (with mixed success) and I see tons of deer daily (some decent bucks too). Every unit is down in numbers I'm sure. Good luck!

Yep definitely no secret and I’m sure I won’t draw but it’s on the list. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Put in 2 and 3rd choice for archery and muzz hunts in that NW corner near you where you can weekend scout and spend less on gas. One choice swing for fences then maybe archery or muzz close to home in the 20s 30s and 40s units.
Or you will end up with 14 points and going with to help on friends tags that get lucky like many on this site lol.

I agree with wweaver79's approach. I put in for decent rifle tags and then archery for later choices. I drew 043-046 archery as a 3rd or 4th choice with 2 points a couple years ago but had vehicle issues and wasn't able to go.

The other thing is to focus on FCFS as archery tags pop up there too.

Have you gone through the NDOW Big Game Status books? They give fairly detailed descriptions of each zone per species and numbers counted during surveys. My girlfriend and I put in for 06's anterless after some tips on areas for 3 years and she drew it twice. We saw 6 bulls the first time and 1 cow way off the 2nd time. I reviewed the Big Game book and put in for a different anterless zone and we both drew it. Saw 6 cow elk the night before opener. Saw over 60 elk (some repeats) in 4 hunt days and came home with one.

The draws come down to luck of a low random number. My girlfriend applied 4 times and drew tags 3 times.

Use the resources like hunt info pages, etc. and talk with biologists and you will find what you are looking for. And ask folkow up questions with biologists. The first email will generally match published info. By 2nd or 3rd email, the info has gotten more detailed on smaller specific areas.

I've bow hunted deer in Nevada a half dozen times or so over the last 10 years and also live in Northern CA. Usually I get 2 points or so and pull a tag, of course one of the easier to draw ones. Odds are getting tougher now. There's a unit I have been after for years but never seem to draw it. It's a wilderness back country style. Let me know if you are interested and I'll pay for the ponies, and we average for 3. 4 + 1 = 5 divided by 2 is 2.5 rounded up to 3. Your only giving up one point.... Here's a DIY bull I harvested in a wilderness unit of Nevada in 2017, Aug 16th.
