Wyoming point share

My brother has 13 deer points, and I have 14, so 27 total. Im looking to burn points in 2023 or 2024, likely on G, but could be talked into a different hunt. Whether it is this year or next is TBD.

The motivator behind this post is two fold: (1) a desire to not waste hard-earned government-purchased preference points, and (2) a desire to improve the hunt quality.

I am not interested in money, but if you want to draw a tag via applying as a party, and can legitimately improve the quality of my first, and likely only, WY deer hunt, feel free to reach out.

I am primarily an archery hunter, and here’s last year’s kills, FWIW.

I share points with different folks every year. Made some good friends, had some fun hunting trips, and always put us in top spots. I think I’ve always put in 18-25 days scouting. Brought horses when they’ve worked for the spot. Even backpacked my gear in early so I could help my hunting partner backpack his gear in just before the hunt.

For those with points, but whom lack the time to scout that rugged country, can benefit from sharing the extra points you’ve been buying all these years with someone with lots of extra time to scout and a wealth of knowledge and experience up there.

It’s a good way to go if you can’t find a better unit to hunt, which is common because there aren’t a lot good deer units up there that you can have a legit chance of drawing anytime soon at your point level.

Pretty much a win-win for those that don’t have experience in an area, live miles away, don’t have time to devote to scouting, and possibly are timid about heading into the back country alone. There is something to be said about having access to someone with local knowledge and years of experience knowing where giant muley bucks hang out. I bet those that have burned high pref pts and shared time with Founder have been literally thrilled with their experience and harvested dandy mule bucks!

As a side-note, If anyone is searching for a great spot to share pts in prime Wyo trophy antelope country please send me a pm. I happen to spend a great amount of time each year scouting trophy antelope across Wyoming and keep pretty tight tabs on where to find the best bucks from one year to the next. The Alaska husband and wife I shared hunts with last year were literally thrilled with their hunt and trophy antelope bucks!

Founder sounds like a great guy, anyone willing to help the fellow hunter is alright in my book! It makes for great memories!

Do you guide these people who share points with you?

Nope. I'm certain Founder would also agree that we are merely sharing a great hunting experience together and have gained life-time friendships and hunting buddies.

Myself and other family members have shared points in the past and have no problem with it. However, I do think it is progressing to a place that will put the practice in question. By the true definition, you are guiding. What you are doing is legal so please don't think I am accusing you. I am simply questioning if it will be allowed for years to come with so many essentially advertising a guided hunt in exchange for a point share. I think we all know that wasn't the intention in the beginning.

I love that I can share points with my sons, my wife, or my lifelong close friends. I really hope that doesn't go away.

I think it is in all of our best interest to limit how much we post publicly for future task forces to see.

Guiding would sure be an easy job if your client hunted alone, packed in their own gear, brought their own food, cooked their own food, brought all their own gear, setup their own tent, spotted for their own deer, cut up their own deer, packed out their own deer, etc.
All I'd need to do is point at the mountain from my front porch and and say, "go there".
Where do I sign up for that job? :ROFLMAO:

I enjoy watching enterprising citizens push the boundary on absurd WY regulation.

WY has regulation on unlicensed guiding. And then WY creates two other nonsensical structures that contradict their stance on unlicensed guiding.

1. Point averaging/sharing and the quasi-guiding that often results from the groups of strangers created (see above, Jims et.al)

2. NR Wilderness law and the "free resident guide license" exception. I have seen many situations where an NR paid a resident a daily rate to accompany the NR in the wilderness. Or other "in kind" compensation (Buzz & Randy Newberg, etc...)

Jims/Buzz - you guys take it from here...

Kinda contradicting your previous post.

No interest in starting an argument. That wasn't n the spirit of my post. Some things should be left to PM in my opinion. You surely don't have to follow it but you should be aware of a growing sentiment against the practice. As I said, I have shared points as well.

I have guided hunts since the early 90s, much of it in Wyoming, so I'm aware of the difference. My point is that difference seems to shrink yearly.

I’m not arguing, just don’t see it even close to the same is all. I do more for my kids and my wife on a hunt than the grown men I hunt with in Wyoming.

I understand your point of view though, I just don’t agree. It’s all good. We’ve all got an opinion.

This went south in a hurry.

The last thing I am looking for, or need, is a guide. I’ve been on guided hunts, and have taken a number of people to my honey holes in MT before. I’ve also shared points with people many times. Last time I checked, I paid for them and can do with them as I please. That does not make me a guide, nor anyone else who ever shares points with another human.

I plan on using (and sharing where it’s advantageous) my 12-26 multi-species points in WY, UT, MT, OR, NV, and AZ this decade, and then exiting the point race.

Another twist down these same lines is swapping hunts. Taking a new friend hunting in your neck of the woods in exchange for them taking you hunting in their area. Should that also be considered “guiding?”

There are threads set up on MM and other websites exactly for swap hunting.

If pt sharing is considered guiding what about swap hunting? Where do you draw the line between new found friends hunting together and guiding….it’s impossible!

Welcome to MM...lol

In all seriousness, it just depends on the terrain you want to hunt and how much work you want to put in. If you like to archery hunt, I would say the terrain in G is about the best for spot and stalk. Plus, if you don't kill you have a pretty good idea where to start for rifle. If you want high desert, with the option to hunt timber, look at the central part of the state. I just don't think you hunt can beat G for a serious archery hunter, but you are going to earn it.

Yeah the Sitka he had to wear during the hunt and give back after the hunt was over? Do you ever post anything factual or just hearsay?

I think Randy newberg is the biggest hypocrite in the hunting industry but with that said it’s kinda sad people tried to tarnish a hunt with his son.

That's about all you're legally allowed to do isn't it?

The shots aren't at Randy. They are at the guy who loves NR, when they have a camera and podcast.

You'll catch it sooner or later, sarcasm is a rough one, almost as hard as reading comprehension ?

I know you could find some who think saying, "go there" from your front porch, is guiding. They totally disregard the real law and common sense, and run with whatever their gut says.

I burned my WY points in 22, just trying to get back over there for another go at those bucks. And, I have been trying to go on at least one hunt ( one day or one week ) with a new person each year. Mostly to just see how each person goes about the process and trying to learn new ideas and tactics. It’s been pretty fun and I have learned a couple useful tips.

I have 12 points, but no idea where to hunt in G

Have a few buddies from MT who may or may not go with me some day, but would love to hear how it goes for you if you get the right group together :)

Cheers, Pete
