Ice Fishing? What am I missing here?

So, on the news today, 138 fishermen, on Lake Michigan had to be rescued by helicopter, after the ice they were fishing on broke off from shore.

1 guy fell in, was pulled out, but died anyway.

See if I got this right.

You drive an ATV of some kind out onto some frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice about 1 foot in diameter.

There are 138 other guys fairly close to you who have also drove out onto that ice and cut their own 1 foot hole.......this has been going on for weeks.

Let's just say 2 weeks...14 days times 138 guys equals 1,932 1 foot holes in the ice that you are wanting me to drive my $8k quad onto? NOT!!!

There's a Sven and Olie joke lurking here somewhere!

Lets look at the rest of it. The temperature?

How much fun is fishing when the fish cannot run, jump, or otherwise put up a fight?

The fishing rods resemble my grandkids' Ken & Barbie rods.

I don't get it.

Oh, by the way, when rescued, those guys were unable to bring ANY of their equipment with them.....DUMB SPORT?

these girls were there....to drill the holes...

They were actually on Lake Erie just about 1/2 an hour from where I live. I knew this morning when I got up and it was 44 degrees and a strong southwest wind that the lake was going to have issues with breaking up. Up until now there have been reports of 18 inches of ice in places on the lake but if you have that strong of a wind it does not stop it from breaking. If the wind had been from the north then they would not have had a problem. Also from what I understand this morning when they went out they had to put down pallets and boards to cross the crack in the ice. In my opinion that is where they screwed up. If you have to build a bridge to fish for walleye and perch then you don't need to be on the ice. I have yet to venture onto the big lake but I will fish smaller lakes and reservoirs because they normally freeze so solid that it takes a lot of time to thaw and make them unsafe.

I have done it a time or two but it has been a while. I think people do it to break up some winter time blues.

Just another excuse to get away and spend time in the outdoors. I would not say it is dumb just maybe not as appealing as other things.

Buck......Would that be, like normal?

The ice ALREADY had a crack in it and you drill more holes and play "connect the dots"!!!!

Excitement is where you find it, I guess.

Lake Erie or Michigan, either way, it just don't seem right to me.....next thing you know, your Grizzly is sittin' on the deck of the Edmund Fitzgerald!

I can think of six holes I would like to drill...

Yea, sitting on your a$$ at home, watching a bunch of stupid, over paid jocks, knocking heads with each other while wearing tight pants is way better then ice fishing.

You are missing some of the best eating around. I read this topic just this morning after I got home with this nice mess of meat.

Well Tony that will happen unless you launch that bassboat really fast.

Might wanna try starting the motor first to help break up the ice, What do you think? just might work..
