    Anyone use this

I didn't google to see if this is a thing or not, however we occasionally use it IV in cattle with nitrate poisoning. Posting dead animals afterwards reveals fat having very pretty shade of sky blue. Urine is blue as well. We recommend an extended slaughter withdrawl for survivors so you don't...

    How many bucks reach 4.5?

Biologist in Nebraska told me a few years ago they aim to harvest 80% of the available bucks each year. So after season ends, 20% are left at 1.5, 4% (20% of last years' 20%) at 2.5, 0.8% (20% of 4%) at 3.5, etc. Maybe my math is off, but no wonder 4.5 is a trophy. Only 1 of 125 make it there!

Widest Buck You've Ever Seen? And Taken?

Worked at a lumber yard in HS. We were doing a little remodeling job for two old bachelors in NW Kansas. They had a muley rack mounted over the staircase in their house that was right at 36 wide, clean 4x, no brows. I'm sure he was well over 200. Metal tag on the antler was either 1965 or 66...

How far is the furthest shot you missed an elk?

A couple seasons ago, I was in on a nice WY bull but he was 575 yds with the herd bedded. Decided that was far and we could get closer. I had practiced plenty at that range and was confident in my setup, but there was no rush. We moved down a wash and peaked over the rise to see a cloud of...

    Recovered treasure

One of my early memories is of my Grandpa telling Dad to be careful what we threw away at the ranch when he was gone. We have found a few pieces of pipe filled with dimes, but not the treasure I dreamed of as a kid. Now I see the treasure was the lifetime of hard work to build what he left...

WY Residents...time to cut a deal?

It's piling on at this point, but my opinion after following this thread for a couple days is that one individual here generates about as much useful productivity in a day as a former community planner. Who has that much time to pat their own back and pound their powerful chest to a group of...

Has this ever happened to you?

Buddy did it 2x! First time in either a 243 or 260. I think there was no powder, just a primer. He thought it sounded funny, like just a pop. Second round split the last 6 inches of barrel down the riflings. Other time was hand loading OO buck for coyotes in his 10 gauge. He got powder and shot...

    Paul Pelosi hammer attack

Reports don't pass the smell test. Some random right wing dude goes all Jason Bourne looking to kill #2 in line to be the President of the United States of America and it ends up as a police observed assault with a hammer? Security of her home even when she's not present? No deadly force applied?

Electric Fence to protect camp RV

If you're concerned about your ground, pour a bottle of water down the rod to soak the dirt and improve the conductivity. I routinely fence quarters (2 miles of fence) of irrigated cornstalks with a 12 volt fencer and use only a single 7/16 rod fence post for my ground. Not ideal, but works to...

Lightning! Who hates/loves and how many have been struck?

I love a good thunderstorm! As kids we lived on a creek bottom and loved when it flooded. We got to see all kinds of things (beavers, snapping turtles, fish, etc) . My sister and I were watching from on top of a haystack when our hair began to stand up like when you put your hand on a static...

    Farmers and Ranchers

I work with many operators from cow/calf to feedyards. Only one out of all of them did not get a start by family or by marriage. He was a teacher who one day decided to be a rancher. He got very lucky, had good timing, makes good decisions, is frugal, and works very hard. Only one. Lots of...

    Sheldon deer

Are we talking about the Antelope Refuge, unit 33? My son had an antelope tag there last year and we tried to cover most of it. The only horses or evidence of them we saw was on Badger. I think we counted 6 total. Antelope were around, but size was disappointing. We saw one small 3 x 3 muley...

    Fishing trip

Water's Edge out of Elfin Cove treated us great for a self-guided trip last summer. Did well on salmon and halibut. My only trip to Alaska, so no comparison, but a non-fisherman flatlanders managed to be very successful.

    NDOW Updated Website

I recently filled out the survey for my son's antelope tag from 2021 because he forgot to and is unavailable. I'm not the most savvy computer guy, but wow it's a hassle to use! Clicked on the link in the email and it just took me to the hunting homepage. After lots of looking around and...

    Alcatraz Island buck 2021

Not my intention to argue, just think it's interesting. Search "Funston epigenetics" or "Barker Dutch Hunger Winter". Maternal nutrition can alter life long gene expression (maybe antler growth?) in the fetus being carried at the time of the insult. Diving down another rat hole, I was at a...

    Alcatraz Island buck 2021

In my view, jkass is correct about nutrition in does bred by that 270 buck. It's talked about as fetal programming in cattle. The exact science is above my pay grade, but starvation of the pregnant cow will alter for life the ability of that year's offspring to express it's genetic potential...

Need help picking right .300win ammo

Reload. I've been running 175 grain Barnes LRX through mine. Also tried 180 TTSX. LRXs gave me a tiny bit better accuracy (just less than MOA with either) Have taken 1 elk, 1 antelope, and several mulies with them at ranges from 50 to 575. A couple DRT, elk took 2 rounds, one mulie flattened...

    Unit 33 Antelope Muzzleloader

Hunted 033 late rifle. We saw a few sage hens south of Catnip up towards the spring. Having never been there, I thought the antelope numbers were low and the bucks average. Bucks on the reserve/no hunt area definitely will blow your skirt up, however I'm not sure even the rut pulls them off it.

    Yamaha 550 Grizzly issue.

I have had similar problems with same model and year. If I run the more expensive gas with no ethanol, it's better. If I add Lucas fuel conditioner consistently, there's little to no problem.

Ever had a new string blow up before?

String breaking/derailment is an impressive experience. Mine resulted from the head of a milo stalk catching inside the bottom cam. I snuck in on a bachelor group of mulies on the edge of a milo field. When the time was right, I came to full draw and rolled up to my knees. The buck I wanted...

    Lightning Stories Anyone?

Not hunting related, but I framed houses in college. On a Saturday morning, we were laying out lines for walls on a second deck using a chalk line. We always used red because it stayed better in wet conditions. I was on one end and the boss was on the other. Suddenly I felt my hairs tingle and...

    Hope vaccine works...

I'm 48. Most people my age are on the edge of polio being memorable. I knew/know only 4 or 5 crippled individuals, but most have passed. Some of my peers have the smallpox wheel on their shoulder, but few younger than me. It's easy to be a be a vaccination naysayer, but history is probably...
