    New Regs are out! 2023-24

Another big change (for me) was slashing the number of tags in Colin Neblett WMA. It’s such a small unit; it was way too crowded for comfort. Half the tags should help with that, but it makes drawing a hunt there much harder.

New Mexico muzzleloader draw odds with new rules

I’ve been wondering the same. The best I could figure was to try to look at other states when they made similar changes, but I haven’t had the time to research it. Anyway, I will probably not be joining the ranks of muzzy hunters this year; I just don’t have time to devote to learning a new...

Where to go for feral hogs?

Thanks everyone. Next time I’m in TX I’ll see if my father in law wants to go for hogs. I guess it’s a good thing there aren’t any close by.

Where to go for feral hogs?

Really all we want is a day out in the woods. If we can’t find anything better we’ll head out to 34. Thanks!

Where to go for feral hogs?

Did a quick site search and all the posts are 10+ years old. Anyone have a spot for feral hogs within 2-ish hours of Albuquerque? Don’t need a big hog, I want something tasty. Will be going around Christmas when my brother is in town.

How did unit 38 Deer go this week?

I drew the tag but wasn’t able to go because of some family stuff that came up. Wondering if anyone has stories/pics of what I missed.

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

Had a great hunt. Started off backpacking in the day before. On opening morning we set up between the main pack of hunters and the private land border, but saw nothing but other hunters. Hiked for miles looking for unpressured elk and found no fresh sign, until my buddy randomly glassed a hill...

    Favorite hunting strategy

So, I've got an elk hunt coming up in thick timber, deadfall, and steep country. My preferred strategy is spot-and-stalk because everyone says it works so well, but there aren't a lot of good vantage points. So I am wondering about the alternatives. Ambush: I found at least one low saddle...

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

This makes sense. This unit is three hours away from me, so I'll get a few trips every year.

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

I was able to fit a couple more scouting trips in at the end of summer. Found a couple of promising spots, but nothing I would bet money on. My buddy that's going with me is all about spot-and-stalk hunting, and I know it can produce results, but its hard to find a good wide-open spot to glass...

    Drew deer tag first try

Finally went scouting yesterday. The game warden gave me a couple recommendations, but I hiked a good eight miles and glassed what felt like a lot of area, and all I found was a bull elk (a really nice 6x6), a couple of does, and a single spike buck. I noticed a big difference in rainfall...

    Drew deer tag first try

My hunt is in Colin Neblett, Oct 15-19. Low, low harvest odds. If I get the elk I probably won't even go for deer, but I am planning on it just in case.

And that's what it comes to...I am doing this for myself and I can cook beef for her whenever we want steak. My oldest kid likes venison, so at least she'll help me eat it.

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

Also, I did a short scouting trip Friday and Saturday. Boy, was that an education! Things I learned: Everything I've heard about how steep and rugged it is have been accurate. It is as steep as a cow's face with heavy brush, fallen timber, rockslides, cliffs, and just downright treacherous. It...

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

I'll be going up this weekend for a short scouting trip. My plan is to try covering a lot of ground Friday afternoon to try to find a couple of good glassing spots, then pick the best one to watch early Saturday morning. I have read that you want to focus on south-facing slopes, but from...

Thanks! The more people I talk to the more I find have not been lucky; is it that hard to draw a deer tag these days?

    Drew deer tag first try

I've read a lot of different opinions about caring for game, and its obviously important. The things everyone agrees on: keep it clean and get it cool. Beyond that everyone seems to have different ideas about hanging/aging/trimming. What do you find works best?

Bigfoot 1: Wow, that is really great information, thanks for sharing! idahomuleyhunter: do you mean a folding wood stove, or a propane burner? Do you have a folding stove you like for the back country? I have my brother and another friend planning to come down and help me find elk and pack...

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

Adventure is absolutely the name of the game! This is a hunt with a 7% success rate - I would be over the moon to take a even a 2 point bull on my first hunt. Its more about getting out, seeing new country and learning the terrain, but if I get a shot at a legal bull I am taking it.

    High Mountain Elk Backpacking

I haven't hunted elk since I was a kid in Idaho 20 years ago. The closest I got there was seeing what was probably a bull elk running away from me. This year I drew a bull tag for New Mexico's Colin Neblett WMA. I've heard its a tough hunt, which makes it easy to draw. That's the whole reason I...

    Drew deer tag first try

Nah, what I mean is if I bring home something tough and gamey that my wife won't eat I likely won't hunt again. Coming home empty handed would be fine, but I'd rather get a little fork bambi that even my wife will like the taste of. As I get the family more used to eating wild game I won't have...

    Drew deer tag first try

I haven't hunted since I lived in Idaho back in 2002. We moved to New Mexico at the start of the pandemic and I put in for deer and elk. Found out this week I drew both tags! I am not out to get a big deer or elk. For me to continue hunting in future years I need to bring home tasty meat that my...
