Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

No, those splits are for draw tags (which may be used on public or private). UW landowner tags have no restrictions on res vs non-res, and it so happens that mostly nonresidents buy the UW tags. I believe one roundabout point of the article is that the 84/6/10 split is (most likely) not...

Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

I mean, the access is supposed to be the same. Did you call NMDGF / a warden? No doubt some landowners violate this rule due to lax enforcement, but I haven't observed it myself.

Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

I feel like I could just copy/paste my post from last year. The problems with the EPLUS program are its size, and the out-of-control tag prices. I wouldn't mind forking over $1-2K for an elk tag if I didn't draw, but in my understanding the prices are 2-3X that, even for marginal units. 1. What...

    Proposed season structure 2025-2029

Food for thought, from the report, discussing rifle OTC elk tags: "Potential disadvantages to maintaining the status quo for OTC rifle elk licenses over the next BGSS: ... Bull harvest and herd sex ratios will continue to largely be regulated by the second and third season participation and...

    Javalina

I shot at 28y. Archery is a different beast! Makes rifle hunting seem easy though. It ain't complicated. Don't be seen, herd, or smelled. Watch their eyes: if you can't see their eyes, they can't see you. Go slow. Take a step, reevaluate. Another step, another evaluate. Just because it's...

    Javalina

I got one on the fourth day. I saw fewer than I expected and mainly in thicker cover, but only my second javelina hunt. I had given up and decided to focus on quail. Then saw him about 200y from the road and put a good stalk and shot on him.

It's open, where you putting in for?

I will put in for everything. I 100% expect to draw deer and elk, and usually draw at least one other tag. Exciting! I think trying to hunt the same units for deer and elk is a good strategy. However, I do think the good deer units are not necessarily good elk units, and vice versa.

If it helps, my grandfather's Remington 1100 12ga is nearly 100% reliable, even when it needs to be cleaned, like it does now.

Which hunt do you have? I will be out there with my father-in-law 21-25 for mule deer (his first hunt). I have hunted it for whitetail and saw a lot of mule deer bucks, but I am guessing October will be a different story.

Let’s keep the E Plus program

Ha it does sound better. I don't know that much about transfer of private land tags, but elk must be the most visible / highest revenue species in NM, no? And you still have to draw them... Well, except antelope. Based on this conversation, I do feel like the conservation-minded hunter might...

Let’s keep the E Plus program

22% is ~45% higher than 15%, so a substantial increase in draw odds. What am I missing? Now, are people going to notice an increase in chances of drawing from about once every 6.7years to once every 4.5 years? Probably not. They might say that there are no programs for species other than elk...

Let’s keep the E Plus program

@ Booner: Talk about cherry picking, you're doing a good job of it. Of course some units will not see a substantial increase in draw odds. 16A is almost all public. 6B would see no increase as it is 100% public, of course. This just means other units would see a larger increase, for a rough...

Let’s keep the E Plus program

Quick clarification: I believe E-PLUS is the entire system of landowner tags, not just unit-wide tags. From NMDGF page: "Landowners who selected the unit-wide hunting option on their EPLUS agreement...." I also believe landowners can sell their ranch only tags, not just unit wide tags.

Let’s keep the E Plus program

"The NM Wildlife Federation and the NM Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers continue in their attempts to destroy the EPLUS program. These organizations try to bias the public perception of EPLUS through emotionally charged misinformation campaigns." What specifically is misinformation?

Let’s keep the E Plus program

"I don’t know if the people who want to see it end are financially unable to buy a tag or think without the program they could draw" Well, if there are 30-40% more tags available in the draw, draw odds should increase by this much. I don't know how much argument against that fact there can be...

    Barbary Sheep unit 29/30

I drew the 29/30 tag for February. I have only seen barbary once when hunting Javelina on McGregor range. I need some pointers too. Might drop some PMs to some of the folks on this thread. Is there anywhere I can read about them? I got steep and rocky, but do they need water? What do they eat...

    2B archery success, sort of.

Hey all, I drew the 2B January archery tag this year. I was very excited, this being my first deer archery hunt (have hunted lots w/ rifle and some archery elk, ~5y). Overall I was disappointed. I saw a couple good bucks, but they weren't really in huntable locations. I saw hundreds of does...
