Bookcliffs roadless access closed from sego canyon.

The otc extermination hunt on the west side was a success. Most of the migratory bison died the first season. Mission accomplished. Only a few stragglers getting killed there now as intended. No refunds. People are complaining about lack of success on the east side draw hunts now as bison...

Bookcliffs roadless access closed from sego canyon.

I don't know the reason why they did this. What I do know is that the tribe vehemently opposed the otc bison hunt that was designed to exterminate the reservation bison that migrate west in winter. Their concerns were totally ignored and the extermination occurred. That was reminiscent of...

Have you ever shot an animal that had a previous wound?

I've shot plenty of animals with all manner of bullets and arrows healed up inside. The worst was a cow elk my son killed that had hundreds of tiny lead shotgun pellets all through the meat. It was a total waste. Please don't harass edible critters with shotguns and bird shot!

CPAW Discussion Item for March 15-16 Meeting

I like it. I would prefer 80/20 for every species and every hunt including MSG. I wish that would be adopted in every other state as well. It just seems like a fair split to me. I'll take 85/25 though. That's close enough for me. In CO, nonresidents will still be getting way more than 25%...

Sure Flaming Gorge Dam is in Utah. You think the water behind it comes from Utah? Very little of it does. If all states relied on their own natural water supplies, Utah would have less water than almost all other states.

    No scopes on muzzleloaders

I think muzzloader hunts should always be without scopes. I've killed everything from antelope to moose with an open sighted muzzleloader. Many dozens of trophy animals. It's not that hard to do. Just get within 100 yards and wait for a killing shot. It's still a hundred times easier than...

CWD plan to kill mature buck mule deer with late season hunts.

It looks like antlered mule deer tags in the Platte Valley only went up in one unit and that was to get back to the same number issued prior to last year. That unit had the high number of hunters last year as always because many hunters that drew in 2020 were allowed to hunt in 2021 without...

    Illegal to pickup DeadHeads

Bluehair said: But I’m talking about dudes riding up and knocking the horns off of wild freakin elk on the winter range to get the sheds. I’m still skeptical. I am also skeptical. I've frequently heard people accuse shed hunters of all sorts of outrageous activity. I think most of it is made...

    Illegal to pickup DeadHeads

    Pre-1990 Photo Contest ... Let's See 'Um!

I took this picture around 1981 or 1982. It was Unit 53 in Colorado at the foot of Mount Lamborn. The kid killed the buck. He was from Oklahoma and I think he was 16. Any chance any of you know him? The buck was an easy B&C typical in spite of the extra points.

Something is wrong with the gun

Something is wrong with the gun

I just got my newest Western Hunter Magazine. The cover story is a Wyoming Sheep Hunt. The author missed a big ram three times at over 600 yards. His excuse was "Something obviously happened to my gun". Reading that after seeing Tri's recent post I just had to comment. I vehemently disagree...

When are most big bucks killed?

Thanks Chester. That may be my favorite buck hunt ever. Got him above 11,000' on the next to last day of the season, during the very last minutes of light several miles from the road. Very satisfying to have it all pay off like that. Here's another pic of the same buck. 218 and change...

    The way around 90/10

In regards to the CO RFW program. Some of those ranches are winter range for hundreds of deer that come from far away public land on multiple hunting units. These same ranches have very few deer during summer and early fall. These ranches hunt during the rut when the deer arrive on the winter...

80/20 split, for Nonres/res in every state

NVBighorn I see what you are saying but I think with the tough draw odds and the waiting periods after drawing, you probably aren't going to be hunting top units in Nevada a lot no matter if it's 90/10 or 80/20. I believe that If you apply in a bunch of states like I do, your overall number of...

80/20 split, for Nonres/res in every state

I have always said that all states and all species should be 80/20. I think that 20% is enough for nonresidents to keep paying for all the point fees, app fees and unused hunting licenses that it takes to play the game. For residents 80% is plenty. Going from 80% to 90% or more doesn't seem...

    90/10 not going away...

While we are discussing the "generosity" or lack thereof of Colorado and Wyoming towards nonresidents I thought I would mention a little known fact. Big time baiting... should it be legal? And do you consider it hunting?

8-11-3 Firearms Restrictions. (A) No person shall hunt migratory birds with: (1) A shotgun larger than ten (10) gauge. (2) A shotgun capable of holding more than two (2) shells in the magazine. (3) A shotgun using a plug of two (2) or more pieces. (4) A rifle of any type. (5)...

    Here It Comes!

Like I mentioned before there is a total ban already in Utah on baiting turkeys or migratory birds. Ag fields and water sources are not baiting. I don't have a dog in this fight but to say it's not possible to enforce a ban on baiting is ridiculous.

    Here It Comes!

I was considering a Utah turkey hunt recently so I studied the regs. Guess what no baiting allowed! Hmmm wonder why? Maybe too effective? Baiting has not been allowed for migratory birds for about a hundred years. Ag fields have always been exempted. Never heard anyone complain about any...
