    Winter conditions

Eastern Idaho just got hammered. Deer are belly deep in snow right now. However, they have been in great shape so hopefully in the next few weeks the temps warm and bare off some feed.

Unit 45 buck can you get him?

I likely saw that buck you have the shed from last July on the summer range and then again on October 19th during hunting season. A really nice, huge bodied buck…I figured he was right at 30” wide. Not sure why I passed on him but it worked for the better.

Haha…yeah, 11 inches of eye guards definitely helped his score!

I’m probably more intrigued by the typical, that could be a really special buck!

    OMG Non-Typical

OMG typical had a great post that many of us face…judging a buck with little time and clarity. So to play off that post what about this buck? He fed away and bedded down without much time to look at. If you had to pick, based on the 2 pics, which one would you choose to hunt?

No excuse 420 in a CVA Acura V2

One other point…for me it shoots bad with a clean barrel. I foul the barrel and run a spit patch and then it’s good. I can shoot 3-4 shots before I start loosing confidence in my groups and/or a dirty gun with some potential to misfire

No excuse 420 in a CVA Acura V2

I experimented with that bullet last year for the first time and after tweaking the powder it became the new load I hunt with. It shoots really good groups for me. I started with 80 gr and it didn’t group all that well. I increased by 5 gr each time and my sweet spot landed at 95 gr. That’s 777...

    6,16,17,171,161 Fourth Season Deer

Thanks for the info guys. That's similar to everything else I've heard. Also the B&C entries for deer in Jackson County are relatively low given the size of the county. I'll keep researching but I may turn the tag back in and continue with the LO voucher. Thanks again

    6,16,17,171,161 Fourth Season Deer

Well I did what I set out not to do...draw a tag with little info on the unit. I've hunted Colorado now 8 years in a row in a decent unit with the plan to save pts and draw 4th season. But with pt creep I wasn't catching any ground so I turned elsewhere. I applied and drew the 4th season in...

    Antlerless deer hunts are bad?

I work in Agriculture, and while I know how hard farmers/ranchers work I don't have too much simpathy here. If you own land near the mountains or near winter range that's part of the risk of production. No different than other farm ground that has different risks...water supply, etc. Here in...

    Javelina hunt options

I shouldn't be thinking about another hunt after all the hunting I've done this year but I can't help it. I have to be in Tucson for work around Jan 20 and am planning to drive from Idaho. Is there any over the counter, archery opportunities where I could hunt javelina and have a decent chance...

    When to load during hunt

Hi all- I'm not real experienced in muzzy hunts and would appreciate some input on when to load a muzzleloader during a hunt? The hunt is late so the weather will be cold and potentially snowy. Also it is for mule deer so I will mainly be doing a lot of long range glassing and if I do see a...

    3 big bucks in 2015

I think the main reason the success rates are 20% is because the season dates are Oct 10-24. The hardest time to find and kill big deer. Controlled late hunts in Nov in the same units are 75%+

    3 big bucks in 2015

LAST EDITED ON Nov-10-15 AT 04:19PM (MST)[p]Thanks all for the positive comments! Wolfhunter- It would be interesting to see the success rate of 2nd non-res/res tags. Do you think it would be higher than the composite general season success rates? Can the resource handle me taking 2 mature...

    3 big bucks in 2015

Well 2015 treated my very good! I'm fortunate to have the time and support to be able to scout and hunt as much as I do. This year I had 3 deer tags (2 Idaho, 1 WY)...thinking I might be able to punch one. Below is a quick hunt recap. I appologize for the poor field photo's...its difficult...

Think this one will be big?

I think he could look a lot like this buck I scouted up last year in mid-July. 4pt on the left side, more of a non-typical frame on the left with a cheater. Maybe its the same buck...

    Mule deer rut

Agree the peak of the rut would be second half of Nov. However the peak of "hunting" in the rut is a good cold, snowy day.. There will be big bucks around the does starting in early Nov. They will just be sneaky and mostly active at night...you may only see does and small bucks during daylight...

    G, H and K odds predictions

Any other predictions on points needed to draw special tag in G? Last year was 3 pts. It looked like about .75 pts per year creep. I'm thinking people will need to break 4 to have a 100% chance. I'm in with a group at 4.5 but still nervous about drawing.

    Surge in Idaho's Deer Population

I was at the public comment meeting where they reviewed population data. If I remember correctly current population estimates are at levels not seen prior to 92. As you all know winters are king when it comes to deer populations in eastern Idaho. There's a robust deer population in the pipeline...

    Region G group applicants?

I might get some heat for this but hopefully someone is interested. I've heard from others with 5+ points invested in WY that they don't feel there's a quality hunt in WY worthy of high points or don't like the idea of "burning" points in a unit that takes less to draw- such as Region G. I've...

    "Sheep dogs"

I heard in Eastern Idaho a few years ago that a Pyrenees sheep dog mated with a wolf and formed a pack. Talk about sleeping with the enemy. Supposedly the F&G were planning on killing these animals along with the pups. I never heard the outcome but a hybrid wolf/Pyrenees would be scary!

    Mature deer?

Those are good points. I guess as a hunter I am basing "mature" off of its trophy potential. I would agree 5.5+ yrs old would be mature most of the time. I do believe deer are a lot like humans where not every deer will have a large body no matter how old they get. I shot a 7.5 yr old two...

    Mature deer?

A lot of hunters talk about how they want the opportunity to hunt and take a mature deer. Just curious what everyone considers a mature deer? Does score also weigh in? Is 3.5 yrs old mature? What about 4.5? 5.5+??? Last year I shot a 4yr old buck (lab aged) that scored mid-170. I don't think I...

    Early 3rd season in 2014

Oh I'll be hunting during this time regardless of moon phase and all the other variables that come to play...seriously! I hunt every minute I can. Just wanted to hear how others factor in some of these components that impact deer hunting. Debating on driving 600 miles, plus 1k for the LO tag...

    Early 3rd season in 2014

Looks like this years third season would be a mostly under a full moon. I agree. Weather is the biggest variable...I'd rather have good snow on Nov 1 vs sixty-degree clear weather on Nov 15th.

    Early 3rd season in 2014

I've hunted the same 3rd season unit three years in a row now and I'm debating going this year...mainly due to the early dates of the 3rd season (and cost). The last three years have progressively declined for me. 2011 (Nov 5-13th)- Medium snow levels, cool weather, high deer #'s, good rutting...
