How did you know I didn't draw?

By far my favourite is Nate Simmons. So much respect for the animals, the country. He really shows the emotions, the roller coaster of the public land bowhunts. He hunts for the right reasons, and he kills amazing animals for OTC or easy to draw tags.

I'm not sure when it opens, but you can apply until the end of May. If you don't apply, you can buy a point in the July to October period.

I hunted elk in October 2015, in unit 48. Didn't see a decent mule deer buck. I know that by October they disappear, but I spoke with a guy who had a high country deer rifle tag a couple of years before and he was very disappointed with his hunt. I would look somewhere else with 11 points.

How about asking residents to pick a unit and a season, bow or rifle but not both ? And same with NR, once you get your tag it's bow or rifle. Then it would decrease the pressure, especially during bowhunting season. That would be a compromise that may prevent having to put residents on a draw.

We were 2 rookies, my friend shot a 5x5 on the last day. We hunted them at 11000 to 12000. We saw a ton, but I wasn't not able to get in the right place at the right time. We had a blast, will go back for sure.

If you want to bowhunt, it doesn't make sense to keep buidling. You'll never get 76 or 61, and whatever you'll eventually get will not be better than the 3 units I recommended. But the elk are high in these units and it is steep. So get a tag and get in shape.

I applied with a friend. I will be our first elk hunt, except a trip in BC 5 years ago. We should draw with the points we have. I know it is OTC in 2nd and 3rd season so we don't expect big bulls, but the success rate is decent during the 1st hunt. Anybody has experience in 48 ? Any pointer...

missalot Not so sure. Huntin Fool names a couple dozens OTC units in Idaho that have above average harvest rates. It's a start, but I don't think these units will be overrun with HF members because of that. After all most members are mostly after draw hunts, and the ones who are hunting...

I'm in your position so I can't help much. I'm looking for a unit to bowhunt elk. But the Idaho Fish and Game website is full of info and maps, you should be able to find what you're looking for. And a magazine like Huntin Fool can give you ideas where to start. Good luck. Martin

OK thanks The mistake I did was not entering my CID number in the For Groups on my own application. I will try to make the correction. The unit we are applying to had almost 50% odds with 3 points last year, and we have 6, so we should be good regardless.

A friend and I have enough points to draw this hunt( we have 6, NR ). We are just looking for a fun hunt with reasonable success. I studied the maps, would go in the southern half, from Ouray to Virginia Peak, La Plata Peak to Middle Mountain. Any opinion, advice ? Thanks a lot.
