    Above Timberline Bucks Question

In general...regarding the bucks that live above timberline...how late in the season will they stay above timberline? In general, when do they tend to rub off their velvet? And after they lose the velvet, do they tend to drop down into the trees? When the archery hunters go after them, then...

    Cookie and Stinky?

Dear Cookie and Stinky, Thank you for the love note you left at our water stash. Unfortunately, our names are not Paul and Zack. My hunting partner was sure that there were two nympho women running around Lincoln National Forest named Cookie and Stinky that were going to come visit us during...

    2nd Season Bucks...How High?

What elevations do you typically find the bucks during the 2nd season in the units with high country? Of course I know that they are where you find them, and that some will always be down low, and that it is very weather dependent...but I'm wondering specifically about above timberline bucks...

    Estimating Age of Bucks

The post about the age of trophy bucks got me to thinking...is there a good reference to estimate the age of mule deer bucks? I know the only way to determine the age for certain is to get a tooth tested, but I'm wondering about estimating. I know for whitetails, there is stuff all over the...

Spread to use for Estimating Elk Score

Last weekend, I found several nice elk sheds in NM, including my first matched set (6x6) and a lone 7 point. I've never scored an elk before, and have no idea what is a typical spread to use for estimating score. I know it depends on the size of the antlers, but what would you say is a good...

    How to Age Sheds

I've always tried to guess how old the sheds I find are, but without seeing them fall off of the deer/elk or being familiar enough with each specific deer or elk, it is difficult to know for sure. Can any of you explain how generally to determine how long a shed has been on the ground?
