Average Cost of a Mule Deer Hunt

20 years of hunting OTC, self-guided hunts, I've killed many 2x2 - 3x3s. Good success rate and full freezer! Refuse to pay guides or private land fees. I've seen awesome country, fought crowds, and glassed empty country for hours. 2x2/3x3 meat tastes awesome and eventually something like...

    Opener

Not until 7-22 Sep...moved it back a week (elk/deer archery) this year and now chomping at the bit, knowing others are heading out! Oh well, patience is a virtue and hoping I'll hit the peak rut...we'll see.

    Tag reprints- delivered blank

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-18 AT 10:22PM (MST)[p]Mine were unreadable. I'm stopping at Pocatello Fish and Game (right off the 15) on my way up to Unit 67. Don't trust mailing them... They said they would reprint no problem.

    66 vs 67

I've done 67 solo archery, for last two years. Steep on foot. Only folks I ran into had taken horses up. I do 2 x 7 day spike camps up high each year and have only run into people twice in 28 days. It's not teeming with elk but they are up there. I've seen elk each trip, within 30yds but...

    WTB Reign 6 or 7

Never getting rid of my Reign 7, it's a tack driver and tunes great so BH and FPs fly the same 70+yds. Good luck finding someone willing to part with theirs.

    Wallows

Guess I need to spend more time sitting wallows... Bet elk assassin isn't giving up his honey hole but he might give advice on aim points, for those who need it.

    Would you take this one?

Those 20 seconds would be enough to nock an arrow and plan my stalk or intercept route, then I'm off to close the distance!

    Butcher in San Diego area

For the last 3 years we've used a guy just off the 8, east of Alpine. Phone # is: 619 561 9348/619 540 3252. They do a great job and have some wonderful spices they add to ground venison. Try the ground chorizo, great for burritos. The Italian is great for spaghetti or lasagna. They have a...

    Euro mount question

Easy mount, with only a small saw in the field is something like this. Cut straight down in front of the antlers and at an angle of about 90 degrees, cut forward from the back. Keep the brass, find a nice piece of wood and then mount them., see pics. Fairly easy and doesn't take much space...

    Crowds

True, I purposely picked 67 because it isn't a high percentage or super popular unit with lots of road (mostly wilderness), which helps ensure I was able to avoid "crowds". It's also OTC and being out of state, I could plan on having a tag, without having to worry about a draw...

    Mauser actions

I've got my grand dad's 1938 GE Mauser 8m he brought back and sporterized. Original barrel. Shot it today in prep for deer season. 10 shots of handloaded 180 grains and 2"x2" group. Gets about 30 rounds per year through it and cleaned at the end of each season. Taken an awful lot of deer...

    Colorado muzzy bull down!

Super job! I was 4 miles in, solo archer, in rugged ID terrain last week. Nice 5x5 bull at 30 yds broadside. I paused (maybe thinking of that pack out on 55 year old knees) and he bolted. Glad you got that beautiful animal and now you have a great pack out memory/epic story for fireside...

Hiked from 6, 000ft to 7,800, 3-4 miles in. Set up camp. Saw 1bull moose (70 yds), 2 cow elk (35 and 60 yds), 1 spike (15 yds), 1 5x5 (30 yds) and 1 6x6 twice (55yds and 90 yds) in six days. Only saw people (3 hunters together 500+ yds) once for a few seconds. Get far enough away and animal...

    Lessons from 1st Elk Hunt - 30yds on 5x5, 50yds on 6x6, 15yds on spike and moose

    >Are you going to go back >before the season ends? (Assuming >your season ends sept 30 >like most of Idaho early >seasons) Unfortunately work in San Diego calls. If I don't fill my two deer tags down here I may go up for late season rifle cow hunt, on the same tag.

    Lessons from 1st Elk Hunt - 30yds on 5x5, 50yds on 6x6, 15yds on spike and moose

Background. I'm a 55 years old retired SEAL, rifle hunted deer all my life in dry AZ and CA mountains. Never hunted elk. Bought a Bowtech Carbon Icon in Feb, practiced 3-4 times per week and can hold 5" groups all day at 50yds. I wanted to share some lessons I learned on my first solo 6...
