    Unit 55 advice

Normally I wouldn't, I was just expecting the recent, out of the ordinary snow to push all those type deer down, but apparently it is business as usual. And yes, apparently it will be getting warmer every day, which is making for a muddy mess.

    Unit 55 advice

Thanks for the advice. I agree, it's only been a couple days, and with each passing day it should get better. My reason for worry, was the fact that the snow and cold came in, and I figured that would have at least pushed tons of doe and young bucks down. And I am not seeing very much. I...

    Unit 55 advice

Any advice for the season going on now. I have been through cabin creek, almont triangle, and the flats east of cabin creek. Total for the first day, about 10 does. I was planning to come out on Monday, and hunt the last 6 days, but when the snow came, I drove out, expecting a lot of action...

    Current weather question unit 55

Best I can gather, there is about 4 inches and still falling in Gunnison, which I think, is about 8500 feet. I think around 10, is going to end up with about 8. As far as how much it takes to move them, I don't have a clue.

I am not firmly confined to 6 days, it is just that I have another tag,and I leased some property, all of which has the best hunting, in the first couple weeks of November.

    Current weather question unit 55

Also, I have spoke to a few guys that have hunted this unit, and season, in the past couple of years, both guided, and DIY, and for the guys I spoke with, the most common method of hunting this area and season, was to ride from point to point, or, area to area, and glass, for most of the day...

    Current weather question unit 55

I finally used 13 points to draw a 3rd season mule deer tag. I have a few other obligations this fall, so I was thinking about arriving Monday the 4th, and hunting the last 6 days to catch what normally should be the best 6 days of the 3rd season. But with the cold weather, and snow coming...

I guess 12 points didn't guarantee a tag. Now I have 13 points and no tag.

Muzzleloader elk Wasatch tag this year

Not sure where you found that info, but I had 11 last year and didn't draw. According to the stats I found for 2015, 100 percent drew with 13 and 12 points, and 1 out of 6 drew with 11 points, then a few drew with fewer points. If not one really jumps ship this year, I should be good to go...

Muzzleloader elk Wasatch tag this year

Just out of curiosity. How many points did you have? That is the tag that I applied for and I had 12 points. According to last years stats, I figured I would have an excellent chance to draw this year. But they only give a couple tags to the top point holders, and if you had more than 12, I am...

    antelope unit 62

Chip, thanks for pointing that out. I did seem wide open in my comment on walking with no concern. A better way to have said it would have been that instead of being reserved to one ranch that may have been three or four square miles, from the maps I have looked over, it appears that I will have...

    antelope unit 62

KP, that is a good method. The problem is, when you don't see those, oh crap, that is big, animals, and you have to weed out the best of what you do have, so you want to make the best of what you have, even if the difference may only be a couple of inches. But again, I have always felt the same...

    antelope unit 62

After too many years of waiting, I cashed in on a unit 62 tag. I have taken a half dozen antelope, all in unit 23 and with very limited access. All with trespass fees, and limited boundaries. Not that I didn't have enough property to hunt on, but it will be unbelievable to be able to go and go...

    Help! Unit C or B

My wife and I hunted C about 12 years ago. I believe since then, the dow separated a small portion of C, to form Y, that topgun is talking about. Topgun please correct me if I am wrong. We hunted around Gillette and didn't do any good, then we went over south of Buffalo and killed two small four...

    Help! Unit C or B

Im not trying to be a smartass, Im really not. But I gotta ask. Why did you pass on a 130 whitetail, when it appears you shot two whitetails that score (from what I see, however the pictures may be misleading) around 90 and 110? I am asking in all seriousness. Had you already filled your tags...

    cow elk slaugter

It seems that most manage, almost anywhere in any state, is cyclic. To start with, the population was too low for objectives, so the state dow's protected the herd populations extensively, then the populations get too high, and they start their "slaughter." Then the cycle will repeat itself. The...

In need of a hunting partner, or advice

Good suggestion, but I can't afford a guide. Technically, I probably could, but if I did I would have to hunt out of state only once every couple years, rather than two or three times each year. As far as choosing another unit, that is what I ended up doing, but the odds are so low, I doubt I...

how was it done in the 70's and 80's

As mentioned, I understand the why of what has taken place, I was just curious as to the how it actually took place. Also, almost like a stroll down memory lane. Personally, I do remember being able to buy an OTC deer tag in Colorado. I also remember as a young man, my dad told me I needed to...

    7 points - Pronghorn guide?

Mudslinger, do you have scores for those? Just curious. The one on the left looks like a monster, but the one on the right is tough to size up, due to the picture angle, etc. Nice bucks though, both look like definite keepers to me.

    Lead ammunition ban

Elk, it most likely came to mind as I had been reading a lot about the situation on yahoo news, and pretty much all over mainstream media as well. And it felt pretty similar at the time to what a very small percentage of the public is trying to do/doing to the rest of society. I do agree it is...

    Utah blackpowder advice

Thanks for the advice guys. I have looked over success rates and they seem to lag just slightly, to somewhat - in most units - behind the rifle hunt. But it goes to reason that the later hunts would be much tougher than the earlier rifle season, but I just wanted to get a clearer picture. I...

    Utah blackpowder advice

Thanks Tx, I didn't even thank about the bulls being busted up from fighting, I was pretty much thinking about simply the hunt, as they had been kicked around for at least three hunts. But that is one more reason not to go late.

    Lead ammunition ban

All of this kind of reminds me of the whole queers having the right to marry thing. Just because 2 percent of the population wants it, they are trying to shove it down everyone's throat.

    Utah blackpowder advice

Sitting at 11 points, the only "better" chance I have of drawing a tag is the blackpowder season in a couple of units. This is good because I really enjoy hunting with the muzzleloader and I feel that the dates for a coinciding rut are much better than the archery dates, plus it can be hot...

how was it done in the 70's and 80's

Just curious, after some thought. I was born in 1971 and have hunted since I can remember. However, I just began hunting the west on a regular basis around 1999. Also, many tag systems that have point systems in place began around 1990 as top point pools for Colorado are around 23 or 24. So...

    7 points - Pronghorn guide?

I really don't have a dog in this fight. But just the viewpoint of a bystander. I saw nothing out of the way with Topgun's post, and the experience I have with him, is he has been VERY helpful and seemed to care about any questions I ask. Apparently there are some other dynamics in play that I...

In need of a hunting partner, or advice

That actually crossed my mind, however, from all the information I have, it appears that it will take max, or very close to max - within a point or so - to draw the hunt. So doing so, I don't think would help anyone - myself or another person involved - as most likely if we averaged less than...

In need of a hunting partner, or advice

This has been a difficult month trying to decide on which are in Wyoming to apply. I had max points and haven't drawn an elk tag there since I started applying fifteen years ago. So this year, I looked over all of the units the best I could, and in the end, I went with unit 62. Problem for me is...

Thanks for all the advice guys. A portion of what follows was copied from my reply to ranger, who had the same tag. So I apologize for any repetitiveness. Mule Deer Cape.......anyone?

If you are very lucky, someone will be able to help out with a cape. But, depending on a lot of variables, you are probably looking at around $100. And if your measurements of 22 - 24 are at the smallest point of the neck, you may be into a raw skin for around $150. 22 - 24 inch neck is HUGE...
