    Co unit 40 Hunt!

Mike is a class-act. I've known him for 35+ years. He will take care of your son. Access to a lot of amazing country! I believe it is some of the best in the State. Managed very well. Good Luck!

    Sleeping in a Pickup

The simple answer is never. I do keep an empty 1-liter bottle in the back so if I do have to wizz, I don’t leave shell. I expect after a few more years I may be in your boat, but I’m not there yet.

    Colorado 2nd season mule deer

Definitely disagree with this. Especially in Colorado; there may be an area with really awesome topography, but if the weather isn't right or the hunt pressure changes...there may not be any deer. There is a lot of moving from top to bottom during rifle season. It is more prevalent in 3rd/4th...

    Sleeping in a Pickup

Assuming everyone is on some sort of pad...I can't fathom why anyone would choose the ground over the bed of the truck? Safer, cleaner, contained, protected, etc. A Canvas Cutter with 4" pad is money. Grab and go. Before the CC, I threw a twin mattress in the back of the truck. I guess the...

Whatever came of the 40" utah buck?

Solid Logic. In many criminal cases, they use Bail as a way to restrict repeat offenders or people with a high probability of guilt. If there is a high level of evidence, there should be precedent to restrict/suspend his license. I don't know if that is/was on the table for this case and...

    Colorado 2nd season mule deer

I wouldn't over-think it. Just take note of where the Elk guys are camped/parked and assume they will be heading out on the nearest ridge/spine and walking the ridge/spine top out. Finding a canyon or draw that is adjacent without easy access that a buck might be pressured into. Assume they stay...

    Colorado 2nd season mule deer

If you are coming from the East, just make sure you are in good shape...especially if you hunt 30. Some of the most demanding hunts I've been on have been on 30. You can stay low and avoid the steep...but your are far less-likely to kill a decent buck that way. As mentioned, lots of OTC elk...

    Mountain Lions Killing Bull Moose

Wow, sensitive much? Glad you got a laugh from all us lowly "split hooved (not hoved)" hunters. Seeing and harvesting are very different. I would assume most don't walk around with Lion tags. Even if they did, there are a lot of scenarios when you may not shoot one...like if you are actively...

$$$ Utah shed hunting permit is coming

Yea, especially since you can just happen on them when you are in the mountains...how do you enforce/regulate that? It isn't going to impact the people that make money from sheds, it will just impact the casual shed hunter who is really just taking a hike. Not sure the logic here...

    Colorado Wolves

Define "huntable"? To keep with the Colorado theme...that is like saying that the Broncos will still be playing football after the 2015 superbowl and Peyton's retirement. Yes, they still technically play some form of football, but it isn't like 2015. Having a "huntable" population shouldn't be...

So, non-native like this variety of Wolf they are reintroducing? Also, the wolf didn't adapt and it did die...so both your points pretty much suck.

    Pressure ………

The hunting traffic in the mountains hasn't increased or decreased since 2019, but the recreational crowd has drastically increased since Covid. More SxS, more off-road groups, more trail runners, etc. Everyone bought outdoor toys during Covid, now they have to justify the purchase every year...

    Binoculars: Which do you prefer?

10x and sometimes 8x is my go to in the field. 15x is awesome off of a tripod, but can be a little hard to hold still in the field when your breathing hard. I've not used a 12x, but I'd consider your primary use and what you may or may not be complimenting it with. If you are in the...

    Final Muzzleloader Scope Committee Recommendation

No one will care…it will give them more excuses to buy another gun. Those scopes can be used on other guns. It isn’t the WB’s job to be concerned about someone’s past investments.

    Why overlap archery and rifle?

I hope your calling is better than your grammar… Actually, I did notice it last year while hunting the North Slope with the bow and I didn’t like it then either. It is a lose-lose. Just shorten one or the other. Again, the question was why the overlap? Or in other, more simple words, who...

    Why overlap archery and rifle?

    Why overlap archery and rifle?

Maybe you are old or your optics suck, but I can see many miles from the top of the ridge we started hiking up at 5 in the am. I’d love to hunt the back half, but my son has three college classes and Homecoming, so that isn’t really an option. I love archery hunting, but I also don’t want...

    Why overlap archery and rifle?

I get that, but those are same weapons and rules/regulations. I would have loved to have had 3 days before everyone else showed up. Just shorten the hunts and eliminate the overlap of weapons.

    Why overlap archery and rifle?

Is there some kind of logic I’m missing with this? Why overlap the archery hunt and Youth Any Bull by 4 days? Having to put the money up front for Big Game Tag in draws.

Not only is this the best answer, but it is the only way to keep younger hunters in the game. At least having a chance in a lottery is better than spending 20+ years waiting without a decent tag…many are losing interest because of lack of opportunity. Do a weighted draw like Nevada.

    Cache Elk herd

While I agree with the general rule, it's not really relevant to the question. I moved 3-5 hours from where I have been hunting over the past 17 years. I'm not interested in the expense required to go down there to kill a cow/spike. I'm looking for local knowledge/insight.

    Cache Elk herd

That is the same thing I found. I can pick up a bull or two on cameras, but not many cows at all. Honestly, all the sign and glassing tells me there are only a few bulls around...very few cows/calfs. I assume there are better numbers somewhere on the unit, but they aren't where they use to be.

    Cache Elk herd

I grew up in Cache Valley and had the elk pretty nailed down in the 90’s and early 2000’s. There were a lot of elk. I just moved back after being gone for 17 years and it seems that either the elk numbers are drastically down or they aren’t where they used to be, so which is it? I’ve put a lot...

    Jarbidge Wilderness NV

I've been looking at potential hunts for 2023 and Nevada Archery Deer is on my list. Tags are tough, but it looks like maybe the NE portion of the State (closer drive from Utah) is a likely option. So, has anyone ever hunted the Jarbidge Wilderness area for Deer? I know it is good for elk, but...

Long Range Hunting’s Impact on Harvests?

Defensive much? If you have to drop 1000’ in elevation and hike up another 1000’ to check a shot…what’s the likelyhood that’s happening? It isn’t! Walking 80 yards is and does happen. That’s the point. I can’t control people’s judgement/ethics on wounding an animal and continuing to hunt, but...

Long Range Hunting’s Impact on Harvests?

One of the main reasons LRH exists is so that hunters don’t have to do as much hiking to make a kill. If it isn’t clearly hit, they ain’t checking it (again, because of the hike/work required). I’m sure it has contributed to additional loss. I have killed several animals that showed no clear...

Long Range Hunting’s Impact on Harvests?

Other peoples choices actually affect all of us as a community…it is why regulations and rules exist. I get your point that it hasn’t been an issue for you, but worrying just about yourself is short-sighted in relation to the future of hunting. If it was determined that LRH contributed to game...

    CO unit 40 muzzy hunt

I grew up on that unit, so I will respectfully disagree. The chances of shooting a big bull without private access is slim. There is always a chance of getting lucky and catching a bull moving through from private pressure, but the big bulls absolutely know where the private is and live there...

TRAIL-CAM QUESTION FOR Niller & OTHERS???

That is ridiculous to expect hunters to stay away from trail cams. They only put them in the best places to hunt…so that isn’t really an enforceable option. It also isn’t my responsibility to inform anyone about cameras, it is the camera owners. If they are there after the deadline, it’s on...
