ive been playing with the Berger bullet and I finally got a load im happy with. my problem is not with accuracy these bullets shoot well, its trying to get the right powder to get that velocity.I tried Retumbo, H1000, H4831,Mag-Pro, Magnum and US869,IMR 7828.Reloader 22 IMR 7828 and the US869 seem to be the most accurate.
this is the load I think Im going to use this year on my elk hunt
US869
77 grains
Winchester Brass
COL 3.300
Remington 9 1/2M
3,100 FPS

Go with that load and find the optimum seating depth. Then look at some of the faster loads. Berger bullets have a preferred window for seating depth. And, closer to the lands is not always best.

Bergers dont seem to like to go fast..my best accuracy is always been below 3100 fps, and thats from several rifles/cart's.

I honestly dont want a berger going too fast anyway if i'm gonna hunt with them. I shoot 140 VLD's in my 6.5x55 and have had impacts as low as 2200 fps, and they seem to work just fine, in fact almost ideal..I've shot them in 30-378's where the impact was around 3200 fps, not exactly the VLD's forte, and would be strictly a lung shot bullet at that speed ..just my .02

I recently picked up Ruger M-77 in 7mm Remington Magnum and took it to our local gunsmith and had them rechamber it too a 264 Winchester Magnum. I'll have too check to see if my load I developed will work on this Rifle when I get it back

that .25mm wobble on either side might cancel out the vibrations from that pressure point in the fore end of that Ruger.

I finally got H1000 to work for me used Federal 215M primers.

H1000
Winchester Brass
Federal 215M
OAL 3.300
70.5 grains
velocity 3,161
I saw that Greybull Precision had 3,225 fps on their set-up but I highly doubt it thatThe Elk or Mule Deer will notice 64 fps. this load had no pressure signs so I think that will work for me this year.

I haven't tried that bullet or powder but 3200 is pushing it on both my original westerners. I'm getting 3165 from 63 gr of H4831 and a 140 Hornady, it's such a great shooting load and the bullet has done so well on game I haven't tried anything else for years.

Many people think since factory loads were listed at 3300 FPS they should be able to beat that. I never could come close, but Winchester used a dual caliber bullet to do it and we can't. those old factory loads did do it by the way, 3320 on my Ohler to be exact.

Stay thirsty my friends

Greybull and Gunwerks use Retumbo in their 264 loads.

68.5 gr Retumbo
WW cases
215M primers
140 Berger hunting VLD
100 yard group
It will do better, top one was cold oily bore.

It funny how by changing to Federal 215M primers my velocity picked up and no pressure signs. I didnt think that would have anything to do with it. I go hunting the 3rd of November so im trying to get this load set up by then. Thanks for all the information you guys have helped with.

from what I understand is that you measure from center to center which was .449 then I subtract caliber which is .264 which then gives me .185".

no, you measure outside of hole to outside of the other, farthest apart, bullet hole and then subtract the bullets size. ce61

Here are pictures: the first one is where the bullet entered, she shot it in the shoulder. the second picture is of the Heart( whats left). those 140 grain Berger VLD work. My wife shot here Buck yesterday at 241 yds using the rounds I worked up.The Buck fell just like in those videos that GreyBull Precison has. I cant wait to see how they work on Elk
