16a youth muzzy deer hunt

Planning on headed down the last week of the season - hunt Dec 26 to the 31st. My 12 year old was lucky enough to kill a nice buck in Idaho this year - and a post Christmas buck would be sweet from Arizona! Never hunted the area - talked to F&G - but members here are always much better for areas to look/start scouting.

Any advice or info is greatly appreciated. PM works also.

also would like to set up our wall tent - any advice on a good camp location.

16a is a tough unit!!! Deer #s are way down. Bucks will be in pre rut. Good luck to your son. Not to discourage him don't expect to see many deer.

I'll throw out a tip:

Most of the deer and the bucks seems to reside in the middle elevation areas(Juniper/Pinion slopes down to where the foothills meet the palo christi trees). There are also pocket herds and bucks that grow old and die in the low desert elevations if you have the patience to hunt it(western side and south side of unit).

Can be a tough hunt, good luck.

Thanks for the advice - that is too bad about the deer numbers. We are willing to hike and spend the time behind the glass.

Any advice for a good spot to set up the wall tent???
