22 bear tag

One of my buddies successfully drew the bear tag this year! We are pretty young hunters and have zero experience hunting bears so any advice would be great. When's the best time of the hunt to find bears? We are planning on spending our time around the river. Is this a good move? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
