$4000 Birthday Hunt

A buddy of mine just got $4000 for his birthday to spend on a hunt. He wants me to go with him but finding a hunt is harder than we thought. Anybody have any good experiences with a reputable guide or ranch for a combo elk and mule deer Rifle or archery hunt? We have zero preference points. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you thought of doing it DIY and getting 3 or 4 hunting trips out of that 4k?

The reason for semi guided is because I live in California and don't have the time for scouting. The other reason is I don't want to tow a trailer 2000 miles. Don't get me wrong I would also love to do a drop camp type hunt. If I new the area well I would definitely DIY.

Sounds like a couple of $2,000.00 landowner tags to me.

I think you're better off in a unit in this price range than a 0 PP area UNLESS it includes some good private ground. The landowner tag could include good private ground too. My 2 cents worth.

Spend the $100.00 and join Huntinfool. Then call them up and ask their opinion. They can hook you up with an outfitter or a landowner tag.

If my partner was footing the hunt costs. I'd be paying for gas, food and bringing the trailer (wall tent in my case) to incrase the quality of the tags we could purchase.

Land owner tags are another option I've been looking at. Just need some references of landowners anyone has used. I'm sure a lot are repeat hunter who don't want to give them up.
