How many of you use a fixed power on a 300 mag? I ask this because I bought a used .300 and it has a fixed redfield 4x on it. I am debating on going with a 4x12.5.....
I'd put a 3-9x or 3.5-10x. Definitely want more than 4x, you've got a 300 mag that'll shoot out to 400 yards, migth as well have a scope that will allow you to see that far. 4x won't quite do it at the longer ranges.
My 300WM and 300WSM have Leupold 3.5x10's on them.(so do the 270 and 7mm) Have worked well for the longer shots when hunting coues, muleys and elk. I try to remember to keep the magnification power turned down until a long shot is required and the time to set up is available. I agree that the 4x is a handicap for longer 300-400 yard shots.
I posted this on the general hunting also and said I would get a 4-12. But I decided on a 3-9x50 vari xII. I like having the 50mm for extra light. Hopefully my shots won't be too far but now I don't feel handicapped.
If you haven't purchased your scope yet read this article before you do. http://www.nrahq.org/publications/tah/article3.asp
It is a real informative article on picking the right scope. I wished I had seen it before I purchased my first. Now I have a scope to sell. My second works a lot better.
