All Alpine / AF Canyon deer to be killed

Seems the rich imbecils who live in multi-million dollar homes built in the foothills around Alpine over the deers winter ranges have finally decided enough is enough, concidering Deer pests that must be removed.

They circulated a petition and gathered over 500 names to have the deer around in the foothills and city of Alpine killed. There was a town meeting and overall it was agreed upon. As I understand it the F&G fought it but decided to throw in the towel and agreed to "remove" the deer.

I am not sure when then slaughter is schedualed to begin or the scope, but I'd assume it would be all deer living from the mouth of AF canyon around to Traverse Ridge.

I am sorry to say this is not a joke.

Is that even legal to kill all the deer in the area just because the deer are acting like deer. Are the animals considered a safety issue or are they just eating to many roses out of the peoples yards. I don't even live in the area and it pisses me off. Is there any way to stop them.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-04 AT 09:49PM (MST)[p]What a bunch of sorry ass sons-a-bitches! They move in here from California and places elsewhere, and then want to change the way things have always been. Hell, I'll bet half the reason they moved here in the first place was because it was somewhat rural and because of the wildlife, but now that doesn't suit their needs, so they throw a tantrum. If the DWR buys into this crap, someone should raise some hell!

Just a matter of time until Utah faces wildfire like California has had over the past couple of years, then these same idiots that are building in the foothills and eating up the winter range will turn right around sue the State for failure to protect or some other horseshit! If you can't already tell, this makes my blood boil. They knew the deer were there when they moved in, so deal with it!

Craig, you pretty well hit the nail on the head. Mainly because they're eating shrubbery, but a couple of idiots have claimed they've "heard", yes heard, not seen, cougars following the deer herds, so they think that by killing the deer the cats will go away. Wrong! When the deer are gone, the cats will start eating house pets, etc. (hopefully not kids), but these people are too damn dumb to realize that.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-04 AT 10:11PM (MST)[p]I know a way that may have an effect. The Utah DWR now has it's own forum (http://168.179.220.25/forums/index.php.) If that address does not work just go to the home page and follow the links.

Maybe if enough of us give our (tactful) opinion it may make an impact on the decision.

I've already started a thread under "Hunting Discussion"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-02-04 AT 02:35AM (MST)[p]this is probably the 150 doe tags for the foot hills of alpine...I put in for one of these tags...If I draw it im going to eat the tag. I cant believe the influence of some of these people. All the money they spend to live in those area's (million dollar homes, no kidding) and they cant build a fence? sad! Im sorry, but what a joke...i dont believe there has ever been a vehicle accident involving a deer in those areas (in alpine). One of the points brought up is the "millions" of dollars of damage to landscaping. One person got up in the meeting and introduced herself and her lawer who was present. Did she really need a lawer? Does that appear pathetic to anyone else? :(

I was at the original city council meeting in May when this was discussed and no action was taken at that time. I talked with the Biologist again in June and he stated that the DWR wouldn't shoot deer that are "eating tulips". I just talked with the Wildlife Biologist over the Alpine area. He said that the DWR is meeting with Alpine City this month to discuss the deer issue. Alpine City can open the town to Archery deer hunting, where those 150 doe permits could be used. Some, limited number, deer may be culled from within the city limits by the DWR. There is no intention by the DWR to decimate the deer herd in this area. That is what he said. Lets get out and support the deer and the DWR or the Anti-Deer folks could force something through.

Would if you could gather enough hunters or just people who really care and don't want to see this and do a protest. I've never protested against anything before, well my union contract, but if there were enough people do you think it could have any effect?? Just curious, I've never even been to Utah, but man, that really chaps me. I hope all you guys and the rest of the sportsman really try and stop this, unless it's too late.

Wouldn't that be something to have a sh.t load of hunters protesting against killing deer. Maybe when I put it that way, it sounds stupid.....I don't know!!

i bet fences are against covenants...

fwp has held a "special hunt" the last 3 years in a town near where i live, as a result about 300 does have been taken. in this case, i think it was justified because the deer were a major traffic hazard, not just a nuisance to landscaping!

one more thing, the # of deer in town really hasn't decreased much, they just keep moving in from the surrounding area. kind of a catch 22...
