Another liberal NM gun bill

A New Mexico Democratic state senator has introduced a bill that could criminalize parents who teach their children how to shoot firearms if the children is not considered an “authorized user,” according to a state pro-gun group.

What are the details?

State Sen. Antoinette Sedillo Lopez (D) introduced State Bill 224, which says in part, “It is an offense for a firearm owner or authorized user to store or keep a firearm in any premises unless the firearm is secured in a locked container or secured by a gun lock or other means so as to render the firearm inaccessible or unusable to any person other than the owner or other authorized user................................

The liberal politicians in NM just come up with anything they want, they should put it in front of the people and see what they want. Just another way to make conservatives outlaws..... You can look at it NMSB224

Let’s please keep this thread free of the attacks. Let’s just discuss the issue in a manner that remains civil.

Federal law is anyone under the age of 18 not legally able to be alone (possess a firearm unaccompanied by a legal adult) with a firearm unless in a hunting situation and then they must be within hearing distance using normal means of communication. The NM Big Game Rules booklet used to publish these laws, but not this year, at least not what I saw when I looked.

Anyone under the age of 18 must have a hunter's safety course in order to hunt in NM in an any legal weapons hunt. This is published and federal law still applies.

Where this write up is contradictory is it states anyone under 12 must be accompanied by a legal adult (over 18) and not a sibling, or family friend, under 18. A parent, or legal adult with parent's permission (i.e. hunter's safety course) can authorize the underage to partake in firearms shooting and training. And then, the write up makes it sound like any parent that takes their 10 year old on a hunt in NM that legally has a license can be fined/imprisoned.

Which is it?

As far as over-reaching authority by government interfering in the workings of your private household, yes they do. Over-reaching gov't policy excuses the accountability away from people, like the tuition forgiveness thread...
