Anybody use "The Claw"

I've been told that on my Oryx hunt in October in New Mexico that most likely I'll have to shoot from the standing position.

A friend said that "The Claw" was a super device that would really help.

Has anyone used this item?

It looks like an Arizona company markets it.

If you have used it, what kind of tri-pod did you mount it on?

Does it hold up under a heavy recoiling rifle like a 300 Weatherby or a .50 caliber muzzleloader?

Anyone use a BOG-POD tri-pod? Would the Claw attach to it?

Thanks,

Don Martin

I use it and I shoot the lil 30-378
It on a Bogen tripod, it best for long range shooting where you have time to set up and take your time shooting off it.
The heavier the tripod the better, and a wide base is the ticket too. Any thing I can do to help Let me know.

I shot my antelope last year off of it. It was on a heavy Bogen also. I was using my 300 RUM and it worked great. If you have the time to set up, I think its much better than shooting sticks.

Don,
I bought one last year, tested/reviewed it, and took it on my coues hunt. I left it clamped to the stock during the hunt so all that needed to be done was slip it in the tripod head. You will want a sturdy tripod for no leg flex and a good head like the Manfrotto 701HDV where the tripod head plate is very secure to prevent wiggle. For standing, you might consider something like the sturdy Manfrotto 055XB/701 combo http://www.adorama.com/BG055XB701HD.html

I attached one to my 50bmg and shot it in the standing position using a manfroto tripod and head. That thing was rock steady and did a bang up job. Basically if you can attach a spotting scope to your tripod you can attach your gun claw to the tripod. It has the exact same female threaded screw hole in the bottom that all spotting scopes do.

Haven't. Used the claw but it looks good. I do love the bog pod it is great and u can attach just about anything to it. On my friends NM oryx hunt we used the bog pod from seated position with no problem

LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-10 AT 10:28AM (MST)[p]The Claw is an awesome tool. All of the larger, sturdy tripods will work. The Bogen Neotec 458B is the Mac Daddy of tripods, the absolute best to shoot off of. The Bogen 701hdv head makes a huge difference also.

The Jim White Tripod Head, in the video, is a great head, but it is a pan/tilt style head. Tough to shoot off of. A sturdy, fluid head like the 701hdv, with the new, large plate makes a huge difference.

I wish I could figure out how to post pictures.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I have ordered The Claw and the 701HDV head and can't wait to try them!

I have a sturdy Bogen tripod, but may end up with the 458B by the time it is said and done!

It has a wide stance and you will really get the most out of it(gunclaw) with a tripod with a wide stance. IMO

LAST EDITED ON May-02-10 AT 04:01PM (MST)[p]I bought one a week ago and I used it yesterday for the first time. It works great.

Well I got my "Claw", the Manfrotto 458B and the 721HDV fluid head. One of my buddies is going to do some slight modification to the head and Claw, then I'll give it a try.

Can't wait.

Gonna be hunting bull elk in just 144 days!

Went up for a day with one of my hunters who also has a ML tag in Unit 6A (he is from Wisconsin) and he was dutifully impressed with the unit and wildlife seen.

We saw 25 elk, a herd of Coues, three buck antelope and one coyote who was darn lucky I didn't have the AR along!

Can't wait to try out all these implements and see how they work. May be taking off my Harris bi-pod if this works as good as the rest of you guys say.

Don, As i posted on another site, be sure to remove the rubber strips on the mounting plate and securely attach (screw, epoxy, etc) to the Claw.

Doug:

Yes, that is exactly what my buddy is going to do. That was the slightly "tweaking" comment I was referring to.

Thanks,

Don
