The rifle season is longer and in my opinion, the rut can be better the first of Oct than the third week of Sept. (minority opinion) That said, less broken racks the earlier you hunt. I would say you can't go wrong with either choice.

I know a guy who drew that tag last year he hunted with a rifle and saw quite a few good bulls ended up with a 330 bull.
He kept holding out and passing on good bulls and had to take a little smaller then the bigger ones seen because he was out of time.
