Just wondering if anyone has killed an oryx with a bow?I am looking for info on how you did it,sitting water ,spot and stock,or any other way.I have never known anyone who has done it here in NM.Also did it run far and shot placement with an arrow.

I am sure it can be done, but, a 2 day hunt with 110 other hunters is not conducive to a successful archery hunt.

Since most oryx hunts are set up like that it becomes very difficult and not what I would recommend for a guy that drew a OIL hunt.

Shot placement is through the lungs. They kill larger animals with a bow so I do not think that is much of a problem. Also since it is open terrain typically, most times I would think you would see them go down.

thanks but I got an off range hunt so I am thinking I'll give it hell with a bow for two weeks.I don't want someones area as we have a spot we like to hunt but I was looking for how they did it so I can apply that to my area.We always check water sources but their is not much track yet theres always oryx in the area.

It can be done, I have three friends that tried it and only one has been successful. The other two gave it hell and got close but just didn't have a good shooting lane or the wind was bad! Spot and stalk was the way they did it. Like you said they did try water holes but hardly any tracks! The best shot for an oryx if you can get it is quartering away. Good Luck on your hunt and I hope this helps.

I hunted them on my OIL RC hunt for a day and half and was successful on stalks on them as long as there was a bush or tree between us, I did stalk two that were on the malpais and should have taken one but I didnt want to shoot the broken horn one (looking back now I should have let it fly) most of my stalks were within 40yds. the bummer of stalking with something between you and they is that when you get within range, the tree or bush is still there in the way of the shot. Two other guys on the hunt I was on, I was told were successful, so yes it can happen if you work hard and smart in attempts. I did take one with the rifle at 150yds at 1:00pm the second day hope this helps out. nmbighorn

I tried it last February on the Rhodes. We found 3 younger bulls that were 31-33" in a good stalking position. I made the quick stalk and was within 15 yards of the 31" and 30 yards of the 33". I had it made until a cow came up to them and spotted me. I had a fully broadside shot on the 33" bull and took it. The wind was blowing pretty hard and I ended up hitting the bull 6" behind the shoulder. Normal animals I would have been ok but with the anatomy of an Oryx I was just to far back. It took the rest of the day to find him and my buddy ended up finishing him off with a rifle so we didn't loose the animal.

That was the very first stalk of the day, the first morning. I would do it again in a heart beat. As long as you are not out for the biggest trophy on the range then I would say you have a very good chance at taking one with a bow.

Another thing is we were hunting the hills so that made a big difference also.

Good luck and I hope to hear you were successful with your bow.

Thanks for all the info I know I can do it.Where you able to get more chances at the wounded bull before having to finish with the long bow!!!!!!

Nope. We found him 1 mile later by dry tracking him. We ended up jumping him out of a huge gully. My buddy was 100 yards in front of me and I had previously told him that if he sees him to shoot him. I didn't want the animal to suffer anymore because of my bad shot.
