My wife and I just found out this week we are having a boy in July. We are trying to come up with some names and are having a hard time. Any suggestions?

I like "Carl" :) Or "Stonewall" :)

Really happy for you guys Ryan. You're gonna have what my mother used to call a "rich mans family". Boy and a girl. :)

We've been through that 3 times now. My wife is now pregnant again so it might be a fourth (for a boy name) soon.

Here is what we came up with.

Isaac 5 1/2 yr old
Luke 4 yr old
Asa 18 months

Other's we liked, but didn't use are
Elijah (called eli)
Carter (I liked, my wife didn't)
and one we are recently liking is Enoch.

Good Luck. It can be tough. Eli was the top of our list for two of the three, but when it came down to it, it wasn't right.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-10 AT 09:39AM (MST)[p]CONGRATS. My wife is due april 30th we are having a boy also it's our first kid i'm pretty damn excited. We decided on the name CHASE. It's simple yet i dont know a ton of people with that name and it's not femmy name. I hope to hell he will turn out to be a hunter. I also liked the name COLLIN
WHISKEY

How about JEFRE or MOSNAR.....

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-10 AT 12:35PM (MST)[p]Congratulations!
Please do the world a favor and do not name him something goofy or give him a name that everyone in their brother is currenly using. And for god's sake, please stay away from goofy spelling of names. It only leads to confusion. My wife's name is Kathi and nobody can ever sget it right even after see spells it out to them. Names that are waaaay over used are Cody, Hunter, Austin, Jordan, Jerramiah, Cole, Colton, Carson, etc. There is nothing wrong with traditional or old school names. I know of 11 Cody's and 15 Hunters that are all under the age of 12. It makes it a pain in the a$$ to hold a kids party and have half of the kids with the same first name. Names like Buck or Mitch are strong, masculine names without being too out there.

I have always been partial to Bart.

Actually here are a few classic suggestions:

Promethus (you could call him Pro)
Nimrod (means "great hunter" - you could call him Rod)
Heracles (the orignial Greek name for Hercules - you could just call him Son or Boy)
Agamemnon (oldie but a goodie - he could go by Aggie)
Orestes (Agamenon's son who avenged his father's death - just Orestes would do fine)
Zeus (also a good name for a Rotweiler or a Doberman Pincer)
Adonis - (call him Donnie - just he he doesn't become a fat kid - then it would be kind of ironic)

Just a few suggestions. Hope this helps. Congrats.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-10 AT 05:35PM (MST)[p]Whiskeybent, On our first kid we didnt find out what we were having and if it was a boy it was going to be named Chase.

NVBighorn, We kinda like the name Owen (seriously) or maybe Nelson or Vitovitch :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and keep them coming

I was going to name my first son SPUD, ( like the potato ) the wife would have nothing to do with it, so we went with Matthew T.

I agree with PolarBear. The traditional names are getting pretty rare now, yet are still manly. My son's name is Landin. If I have another he will be named Brace (wife be damned!) I think it would be cool when I'm yelling at them "You better Brace yourself, and you're gonna be landin on your ass!"

Some of these suggestions would give your son the absolute right to grow up...... and kill you in your sleep!

I like Mickey, and my wife hates it. As the dad you can always tag him with a cool nickname.

Congrats, I'm happy for ya. My wife and I just had our first in October, and we didn't find out beforehand. I was way excited to have a boy. We had a few names picked out, but when he was born we went with Carson, it fit him the best. Another one we liked was Cale.

Nocked N Loaded

My boys names are.

Adam Alan 26 yrs old

Glen Owen 21 yrs old

Alan is mine and my dads middle name

Owen was my grandpas first name.

Our sons are Clay Alton and Colten Barrett, we call him Colt, Our daughter is Talyah Rylan (just incase it comes out a girl....LOL) Also like Casin, Cale, Cade, Barron, Byron, Jax, Jaxon(Or Jackson). Good luck. With our last son, we had all these in mind and sometimes i think it is best to wait till you see the little guy to pick the name. My best suggestion is to have 3 or 4 ideas, and when you see him, you will know. Our first son and our daughter were both named before they were born and it worked for them, but with the third nothing really stuck until we saw him. Congrats to you both!

My first son's name was Hunter. He was born with Potters Disease and was only here for 17 days. He'd have been 12 now. When we found out that the last kid we'd be having was a boy, we decided to name him Canyon and in memory of his brother, his middle name is Hunter. he's 9 and he'd shoot everything in site if he could. Good luck finding a name. Whichever you choose, it'll have its own special meaning to you and that is what is important.

Steve

If you guys rodeo you have to give him a true rodeo cowboy name like Rope, Speed, Cimmaron, Cheyenne, Colt, Austin, Blue, Cody, Bronco, Jesse, JJ, Chip, Zed, Dillon, Maverick, Rowdy, Stetson, Tex, Cole, Ty, Wyatt

If you are going for the stuffy, intellectual names go with: Winchester, Emmerson, Charles, Alexander, William, Albert, Aris

If you want a good ol' boy name try: Chelmer, Jasper, Tommy, Bubba, Cleatus, Rusty, Billy Bob, Pete, Bo, Luke, Buck, Buzz, Wiley, Woody, Stony

Tough sounding names: Decker, Diesel, Truck, Traylor, Axel, Butch, Hunter, Chase, Jett, Tucker, Jagger, Yager, Stone, Rocky, Steel, CHUCK (as in Norris, DUH! lol), Kade, Rex, Rocco, Rock, Rico, Marcus, Spike, Blade, Rocky,

Pretty boy names: Pierce, Oliver, Lucas, Caleb, Riley, Aaron, Kian, Rowen, Kenai, Josiah, Micah, Grant, Lincoln, Foster, Lawson, Donovan, Mathis, Jensen, Bennet, Roman, Elliot, Parker, Rhys, Ashtin, Sebastian

LuDean
LuDell
Lurell

Huge collection of awesome names at the Utah Baby Namer site. LOL

My favorite boy name of all time? Adam. I just love that name. But I have all 'K' name boys. Karter, Kai (pronounced Ky) and Kenyon. Good names too. Kai is actually named Kai Adam, but we had to go w/K names because that's what the boys in my husband's family do. They're all K names so their sons are too. (Kevin, Keith, Kolby, Kanin, Kash, Kaleb, Karter, Kai, Kenyon)

We named our first boy Hunter James Hemingway. It was my wifes idea and it sounded good to me.
Our next one we will name Fisher. J/k

Then there's Sancho

nvnative, Owen would be cool. I told my Owen you were thinking of that. He seemed pleased. :)

Well just do your son a big favor and keep it simple and maker sure it's a name that he will not be teased all of his young life with because he will either have to learn to fight at an early age or be the kid that gets picked on all the time.

My Dad always kind of resented his mother for giving him a weird name, "Elmer" and he learned to be a scrapper at a very early age. He always told me that he wondered why she would do something like that to a kid. His middle name was worse yet.

I knew a kid named Gunnar growing up - he was jerk. Wouldn't inflict that on my kid!

As a matter of fact - after supermom TripleK just posted almost every possible boy name available ;-), why don't we turn this thread into the names we would NEVER name our sons. Here are my top 5:

1 - Andrew (because of another kid I couldn't stand)
2 - Tory (just an excuse to get your kid's butt kicked)
3 - Cade (same reason as #1 - same person actually)
4 - Gunnar (see above)
5 - Prometheus, Agamemnon or any other name HomerJ suggested (Really Homie??? I really pity your kids dude...)

I'd never name my boy Kim or Pat.

I like the name Fernando as mentioned above. I don't know why....maybe because it sounds so cool with a Mexican accent! You really got to roll the "r" though to get the full effect.

Steve

Roy...Gunnar was cool! I liked him and I like that name.

I'd never name a kid Roy or Garrett or Algernon.

Congrats!

Have two or three picked out and as mentioned when you see him you will know.

Maybe you could name him after a famous hunting person like. Kirt, Doyle, Ryan, Guy, etc? NOT

The name I was born with was Forrest John after both of my Grandfathers but my folks had the sence to change it. I thank them for that.

TripleK, I know a guy named Gunnar who, I think, still lives in Utah. One of the best turtle hunters in the west. Must be the same Gunnar Roy knows.

I have girls so I never had to pick a boy name. But it seems rule #1 would be to stay away from these cutesey-wutesy names women seem to like so much these days.(Some are even on this thread which is more than a little surprising to me.)

A boy will be a man someday and needs a man's name.Short,strong,no-nonsense.

Well - It's definitely not the same Gunnar - this dude wouldn't have none the difference between a snapper and a plug in his butt... wait - that kind sounds like some other turtle hunter I know and considering that assesment did come from you Eel, it probably is the same guy and of course, I don't feel threatened. I didn't then and I won't now.

BRIAN

The boy's name Brian \b-rian\ is pronounced BRY-en. It is of Celtic, Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is "high, noble". Could also mean "strength". Historical: Brian Boru (10th century) was a warrior who became high king of Ireland and one of its greatest national heroes. He liberated the country from the Danes in 1014

+1

My boy is Thomas Gregory.

Those unusual names will be a pain in the ass down the line.
Misspellings and constant corrections over the phone not to mention the antagonism by classmates as he grows up.

I don't know what led me to believe that most people on MM were, middle class, moderately educated, American outdoorsmen.........some of you people have way too much LATTE' in your diet!

No kidding! A ton of trendy "hey everyone else is naming their kids that why don't I" kinda thing. IMO

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. When I first found out we were having boy I wanted to find a unique name that had to do the outdoors. But the more I think about I think naming him after my grandpa means more then anything. Plus alot of people in NV knows who his grandpa is. So we are thinking John Ryan right now but we will see in four months.

TrippleK I think Lane would be a good rodeo name for a boy.

John Ryan sounds good to me. Its got my vote. My kids are Brenden James and Jayson Scott.

Congrats, I think if you cant find one off Triple ks list your out of luck, I know who to call if we ever need a baby name.

My four boys are:
Eric Allan(after me)
Travis Hunt(wifes maiden name)
Casey Bill(my grandpa)
Brevin Ray(wifes grandpa)

Other names concidered:
Chase
Braden
Brandon
Payton
Tyler
Dylan
Colton

Eric was picked well before he was born. The others changed after they got here.

Seven or Soda can't remember where those came from,

My boy named his son "Diesel", If he had a girl she was going to be Chevelle but he was a boy so they named him "Slade"

Eric is also a great name.

Congratulations to you and your wife,

Some might not like the "juniors" and "seniors" and a pretty common name "Peter" (or Pete as nickname) but it worked for our family. My Dad was a "Joe" to all his family and buddies in WWII, but after the war he settled in the west and used the middle name. I was the first born, and was the "junior". Kinda fun growing up...he was Big Pete and I was Little Pete. I then gave my son the same name. Then it became Pete, Re-pete, and Re-re-pete! With three Petes in the family, we mostly used a variety of nicknames, and joke names. But mostly as adults, we were pround of our names, and have a lot of "three generation" family pics we cherish. This is one for all the "Petes":)
