LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-07 AT 05:07PM (MST)[p]My buddy drew the public tag on a CWMU that I guide on. We were able to get up there the last week in Oct. He was hoping for a 24" 170ish or so buck. He had only killed one other buck.
With the weather this year hunting was tough. This unit does a lot better with some snow as bucks move in there. But with the snow a week earlier pushed a lot of does in and it was only time before new buck were to show up.
First night out he passed up a 26" 4-point no eye guards that was probably a 165ish buck. He worried he made a mistake.
We saw a lot of bucks the next day, including a 27"ish 3-point that was heavy, but again passed. The next morning after passing on a number of smaller bucks we were heading back to the bike from a long hike when I noticed a deer heading up the opposite side of the canyon. Through the binos I could tell he was a good one and warranted a look at with the spotting scope.
We watched him bed and I could see he was only a 3X4 but great mass and tine length.
We figured him to be about 26" wide, and no eyeguards. Don decided to take the buck. We were about 650 yards and move in to 380. Don wished to get closer. We were right out in the open and I told him it would be better to shoot now. But he wanted to get closer. I scoped him again and he was asleep, east stalk now.
We got to 238 yards. I started the video camera up on the tripod and told Don to take him when ready. At the shot he bolted from his bed and I though he missed, Don hit him again quartering hard towards us and he only went another 30'.
Ended up he hit him perfect the first time right behind the shoulder. The second shot hit him in the neck and traveled the length of the body, (found that bullet under the skin in front of the opposite ham).
The buck grew when we got up to him. He was way wider than we thought. I gave the buck 22" ears, they taped to 26, and he ended up being just over 30" wide.
We were both pretty excited.

Don builds short reed goose calls, and told me for a tip he would get me one. I am still waiting on that.
172" gross
Congrats Don!

I will post some of the video when I get a chance.
