You read the subject line correctly. In Unit 52, for archery season: the FS is going to replace the bridge over the Rio San Antonio. They "hope this project will be completed in 30 days as scheduled"; that's what I was told when I spoke with the Tres Piedras office.
Forest Rd 87 will be closed at 10 mi. in from 285: Aug 31- Sept. 28.

Forest Road 87 to Cruces Basin and Lagunitas to close for 30 days

Release Date: Aug 19, 2015

Taos, N.M., August 18, 2015?A bridge replacement project will affect hunters, campers and visitors to the Lagunitas Campground Area and Cruces Basin on the Tres Piedras Ranger District. A pre-fabricated concrete bridge will be installed on Forest Road 87 where it crosses the San Antonio River at about 10 miles west of U.S. 285 just north of Tres Piedras. The arched, concrete bridge will replace large culverts that prevent fish passage during low flows and that have created downstream fish habitat degradation. The concrete structure will allow the Rio San Antonio to flow more naturally and restore fish habitat. Construction is scheduled to begin August 31 and will last about 30 days.

Visitors who wish to access to the Lagunitas area will have to drive through the Colorado side on Colorado County Road 443 and through the Los Pinos State Recreation Area, to Forest Road 87A and on to Forest Road 87. Additional access is via Colorado County Road 17, north of Chama, and onto the Rio Grande National Forest Road 117 which turns into the Carson National Forest Road 87.

?We regret the timing of the bridge replacement and realize this impacts the hunters and campers who enjoy this area,? District Ranger Chris Furr said. ?We apologize for the short-term inconvenience and hope that the needed improvements to the bridge will be completed in a timely manner.?

The timing was to provide better construction access during low river flows.

Questions concerning the construction can be directed to the Tres Piedras Ranger District at 575-758-8678 or the Taos Supervisor?s Office at 575-758-6200.

How the hell do you get to the campground then? All the way up into Colorado and down? Pretty freaking stupid...

That, or the archery hunters who are willing to make the extra drive will have the place all to themselves. Though, many will probably make the extra drive I'm guessing, not like there are a lot of options...

Plus, projects like that tend to lag behind schedule a couple of weeks or more due to unknown field conditions, weather, remoteness of site, supplier delays etc. Might not be until the rifle cow hunt or even spring turkey before it's back open, LOL!

IMO, it's less of an unknown for the archery hunt, those guys know exactly what to expect, and more of a crapshoot for the later hunts due to possible project delays and shifted pressure/elk patterns.

Either way, it's a big headache for everyone....

Forest Road 87 will remain closed for about another month due to contractor delays. We realize this is a huge inconvenience and impacts hunts and other recreation. We are working hard with the contractor to resolve the issues.

FYI....STILL CLOSED!

I went up there on the 6th of September.I just left on October 1st.And It looks the exact same. What BS.They have a track hoe from United rentals and a Loader along with a back hoe all sitting idle.2 months for a simple bridge.with no bypass.

And now their sign dates have expired so people are driving all the way to the bridge to get turned around.
