Changing the arrow set-up and thinking about fletching my own

I'm shooting a Matthews Switchback and goldtip xt hunter 5575 with 3" vanes.

I've never fletched my own arrows - I was thinking about buying some stuff to do it on my own, but wanted to know how difficult it is to get going.

The other thing is, I've been hearing a lot more people switching to having their arrows wrapped and shooting the 2" blazer vanes.

Would this be a good move? I am shooting a trophy taker (shaky hunter rest) which I did read might have some troubles with this kind of vane...

I shoot the same bow and I had contact issues with Blazers on a Shakey Hunter. The prongs were just too wide. I switched to a Trophy Ridge Drop Zone and have never looked back.

Blazers are a bit taller and a bit stiffer than most vanes, which is what makes them work well. I think it is debatable as to whether Blazers steer a broadhead better than 4" vanes. but I do think they will steer better than 3" vanes. They are definitely more durable. They are really hard to tear or wrinkle. Fletching them is easy, you just can't put too much helical or offset to them.

I use a Bitzenburger (the best, hands down) jig with a right helical clamp, and while it does take a bit of time, it is definitely not difficult.

Fletching you own arrows is like reloading your own bullets.

You will need a grain scale
Arrows squaring device or ASD
Bitisnburger arrow fletching jig ?I also think it is the best?
Arrow saw ?I built mine with parts from harbor freight for 30 bucks?

I cut all my shafts and square the ends with the ASD

I then weigh all my parts i.e. nocks, inserts, and vanes. This tells me what I can match up for all of my arrows to be the correct weight.

I then tune my arrows here is a link on how I do it. http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCForumID23/2083.html

Then I fletch them.

It takes a lot of time but it will certainly make your arrows fly better than anything you can buy pre maid.

Archery is a year round commitment!!
