New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission approved a Joint Powers Agreement on June 9 to form the New Mexico Central Arizona Project Entity to take responsibility for the Gila River diversion project as a part of the 2004 Federal Arizona Water Settlement Act. Several counties have been asked to join the group.
Yesterday Silver City Council denied to be part of the group until more information could be provided and today Luna County Commission will vote this afternoon at 6pm. Grant County Commission will vote on the 25th and Deming City Council will vote on Friday the 26th.
Not only will this be economically not feasable, but environmentally, a poor decision based on current information.
The over flow of this river drains out into the basin that has created riparian habitats for several federal and state endangered species. This isn't even including the environmental impact for the pipeline needed to get that water from the Cliff area all the way to Deming or Las Cruces.
The rewards definitley DO NOT out weigh the effort and cost to the communties and our environment, by a country mile.
