Counting Elk ?

Just curious here..... i was out last weekend trying to fill my spike tag when a helicopter buzzed overhead then turned around and buzzed thru a different location. I'm assuming that it was looking to survey the animals and that left me to wonder just how they do that. the copter was moving way too fast for them to see anything in the brush areas. are they using some other means of identifying the animals ?

Thermal cameras and also to just locate the bigger herds

They just fly grids and do the best they can. As with all things scientific they have room for error.

Also I’m more curious how many deer they seen. The elk appear to be doing just fine.
