CPW hosts herd management meeting

MEEKER, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting the public to discuss elk management options for Game Management Units 1, 2 and 201, recognized as prime hunting areas in northwest Colorado. The units, also identified as Data Analysis Unit E-1, are managed to produce high-quality elk and require many points to draw a license.

The presentation will take place Thursday, July 12, 6 p.m., in the Lodore Hall at the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge.

Wildlife officials will use the public's input gathered at the meeting to establish population objectives and set the male-female ratio for this herd.

"Because of the high-quality hunting in these units and their importance to our local economy, landowners, sportsmen, outfitters, business owners, and anyone with a vested interest in this big game population should attend and offer their input," said Bill de Vergie, Area Wildlife Manager.

The benefits and drawbacks of various management alternatives will be discussed, including a status quo option. The public will have an opportunity to indicate their preference through a survey provided at the meeting.

"We always merge the public's input with landowner needs and our research and data to make management decisions the public can support," said de Vergie.

Lodore Hall is located in Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge - Take Highway 318, turn south at approximately mile marker 10.

Do you happen to have a link to the Unit E-1 management plan? I followed the link and was not able to locate the plan within all the others.

there isn't one, this will be the first time any real plan has been formulated to my knowledge.
the current population objectives set by the CPW for 2 and 201 is 950 elk total for the 2 units combined, which is where it is close to now in our counts and observations.

Any idea why such a low herd objective number? I would think them units could handle quite a few more animals.

On another note: Does the CPW have anything similar on the deer and antelope?

I think it is finding a balance between livestock, wildlife and habitat carrying capacity. I know there has been conflicts between livestock producers and elk.

there is no DAU for deer or antelope that i am aware of

I wish I could go but live too far away. My only concern with those units is that I will probably never draw. When I was 25 I decided I was going to start putting in for the unit and it would be a great 40th birthday present for me to hunt the unit. I have 12 elk points now and every year I put in for preference points, they raise it a point. The point creeps have killed my hopes of ever hunting this unit. I definitely won't be hunting this unit when I'm 40. Probably not when I am 45. Probably never. I'm sure it will just go to someone with a landowner tag or outfitter that can bring in a millionaire that can hunt anytime he wants and really has no passion for the outdoors or can ever truly appreciate what he kills and what that huge Bull has endured to get that size. Very Frustrating to see how the points system has turned out.
