I have enjoyed the ideas being tossed around about hunt management. Here is more on an idea that came up in one of the other threads about UT deer management.
The following are estimates for how long it would take to draw a guaranteed bonus tag for a LE deer unit in UT if you assume a guy started with 0 points in 2007. These estimates assume that applicant numbers stay the same (when in reality they are increasing every year), and that tag numbers stay the same. The low estimate is if every other successful applicant had more points than our sample guy, and the high estimate is if every successful applicant had less points than our sample guy. The real time it will take to draw a guaranteed bonus point tag is probably somewhere in the middle, unless you beat the 1% odds and draw early.
Henry Mtns. Rifle = 163.1 to 346.6 years
Pauns Muzzleloader = 42.2 to 88.1 years
Vernon Rifle = 29.8 to 59.7 years
Book Cliffs Rifle = 15.9 to 31.9 years
Diamond Mtn. Archery = 4.3 to 9.3 years
What if deer hunters in Utah had to choose between trophy and opportunity when they put in for the draw? What if there were not separate point systems for LE and General deer hunts?
In 2009 if UT goes to 25-30 general season deer hunts with set quotas for each hunt, it would be a perfect opportunity to change our current draw and merge the bonus and preference point systems.
This would benefit new hunters, and improve draw odds for both trophy hunters and opportunity hunters alike. It would make hunters choose what their top priority is, hunting every year, or hunting a trophy unit. No more having your cake and eating it too.
It could be done at least 3 different ways;
1. like NV where any time you get a deer tag, even a leftover OTC you loose all your deer points.
2. like we currently do in UT, where points are lost if you draw any of your choices but not if you buy a leftover OTC.
3. like CO or WY where you only loose points if you draw your first choice.
The guys that really want to hunt a trophy unit wouldn't have to compete with the opportunity crowd, and the opportunity guys would most likely be able to draw every year. It would be a huge help with point creep, and people just starting in the draws would have a realistic chance of drawing several trophy tags in their lifetime if that is what they desire.
