Subject: Protect Gun Rights - Urge Gov. Sandoval to veto Universal Background Checks
Earlier this afternoon, the Assembly passed SB221, Universal Background Checks, by a vote of 23-19. Four Democrats - Assemblymen Carillo, Daly, Ohrenschall and Sprinkle joined the Republicans in opposing this bill favored by out of state gun control advocated led by Michael Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
The bill next goes to Governor Sandoval for his signature or veto, and now is the time to let the Governor know how the people of Nevada really feel about this bill. The Bloomberg group and other out of state interests have already spent hundreds of thousands dollars to get this bill passed, and they will only intensify that effort in this last step of the process, spending big money to run ads like this one attacking our Governor, and spreading misleading information. Now is the time to act and protect our constitutional rights from attack by liberal eastern elites. Let's let the Governor know that the people of Nevada stand with him!
As we alerted you over the weekend, this bill is no longer about the good parts of SB221 which improve reporting of those ineligible to own a firearm. We already knew this because the legislature failed to even hold a hearing on SB520, an act introduced by the legislative Republicans that included all of the good mental health policy features of SB221, eliminating only the Universal Background Checks. Any doubt was removed when the mental health provisions of SB221 were amended into SB38 in conference committee, making it plain that SB221 was no longer about policy, but about pure gun control politics. In fact, when asked in the conference committee on SB38 why he wanted the mental health provisions of SB221 amended into SB38, Senator Jones, sponsor of SB221 said he wanted the "good parts" of SB221 to survive if it was vetoed.
Don't let the out of state enemies of the 2nd Amendment win this battle. Senator Jones, the bill's sponsor, was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle saying that "hundreds of thousands of dollars" have been spent in an attempt to get this bill passed, and it's clear that this money is coming from outside our state. One of the Assemblymen said in debate on the floor today that he was voting against the bill because he resented the extraordinary pressure that legislators were receiving on this bill. Nevada's laws should be debated and implemented by Nevadans, and based on what is good for Nevada.
