The Story;
My point of view: It all started last week when my brother called me and said that his bishop's dad whom is 67 years young had a mature bull tag and was having a little trouble filling that tag. They had been looking apparently on the ATV's and walking a little but it was very hard for this elderly gentleman because he was on blood thinners and was really short on breath. So my brother said let's see if we can help him and naturally I said yes. So Thursday night we went on the horses and had a great idea as to where some elk where hanging. After calling and seeing a cow and two calves on the ridge we were all cow calling and getting the herd bull all riled up!! Then he finally showed himself on the ridge and he got two shots off. But I was pretty sure that he had missed. So we went and checked and sure enough he had missed. Then we got into some of the satelite bulls I called in a 4x5 to 40 yards and he opted out. That was that day riding out in the dark.
Then Saturday was the next day that we would be able to help again after getting done with the work week. So after getting up at 4:00 a.m. getting horses saddled and loaded we headed back up with the mountain. Unloaded then begain to head to another area that we also new their were elk in. Heard a few early morning bugles and headed that direction. Got into the Quakies and made our stalk on the horses till we were close enough that we could walk with out the elderly gentleman getting to wore out from hiking. We walked throught the trees and I could see some elk thinking it was a bull headed straight for him but it was a cow. Then she took off up hill. Then eveything broke loose we had four different bulls going nuts!! So I headed for the closest ones and their were two six point bulls that I'm pretty sure were battling it out as they were on this little ridge. Got in position for the shot and he said shoot the closest one. I said no shoot the bigger one that is down hill of the closest one. As I noticed he had great tops. Bull standing broad side KaaBOoom Nothin, Next shot I could here the port when it hit the bull but it was a little back. Then the bull turns to go away and two more shots one clipped his back barely hitting his hide. Then the final shot as the bull is going over the hill the *hail mary* cause all i could see is the neck and antlers over the hill. This was the OOps shot that KTC pointed out. Then he is gone. Bet you cant guess what I'm thinking now, right! he's wounded and gonna travel. The other bull heads up the ridge line and my brother and gentleman's son are coming to us as they were tieing up the horses. My brother points at the bull on the hill as if to shoot him and is cow calling. So I waive him down to tell him that he had hit the bigger bull and he went over the hill. So off to look for the blood trail but we gave it about 1/2 hour before we persued him. As I looked I could only see a few drops of blood. I was very worried at this point we all know how strong these animals are.
Then my brother and the gentlemans son headed back to get the four horses while I and the gentleman looked for the bull. We headed into another small stand of Quakies so I told the gentleman to wait here and watch as I went back to were he had hit the bull originally. Then I followed the tracks and little bit of blood that we did find and came to within 10 feet of where the gentleman was and where I had told him to stand. Then I proceeded through the quakies and went another 30 yrds from where he is standing and had been standing for about 10 minutes and see his bull laying on the ground. So I kicked him in the butt no movement and no one saw me do this so I headed back acting as if I couldn't find the tracks. Then came to his son who had returned and whispered get your camera on. Then told the gentleman to head down towards the bull. Yes we got a real reaction when he found his own bull. Pictures were taken, high fives were given, then the work began. But nothing like you would think the horses made short order of the pack out. Now you know the rest of the story!
