Do It Yourself Hunt

I am moving to Albuquerque, NM in September for 8 months of training for the Air Force. Taking an elk is high on my hunting bucket list. Seeing as I'll be so close to Colorado, I am thinking about driving up there and doing a DIY hunt in October or November. I've never been elk hunting. Right now I am looking into areas near Durango simply because I can make it there in 3.5 hours. I am looking for any and all advice on DIY hunts in SW Colorado. I will be using a rifle. Pagosa Springs, Valicitos lake had a burn a few years ago so it should be good now or north of Pagosa Springs is Weminuche wilderness, I prefer 3rd season but be prepared for lots of snow bring chains, good luck, and thanks for your service.
