I'm far from an expert on elk, but I can tell you sometimes its not easy to judge them.
My Wyoming archery bull from last year, for me, was a tough bull to judge. Not tough to tell he was well worth taking, but I was about 20 inches off on the score.
He doesnt have a lot of what some here have said a bull must have to score well. None of his first three points are over 18. The inside spread is very average.
But, he does have some very long main beams, good but not great 4ths, but his 5ths are about as good as they get. Mass was pretty good too.
I saw this bull twice a couple days before I shot him, and had a long time to judge him. I was not even close on the score...largely because I didnt give the top as much credit as I should have. The 5ths make up a lot of ground on not having the best bottom 3 points.
My point is just be aware that a bull with a good, solid frame, that has something extra on a tine or two may be worth a closer look.
I thought my bull would gross score 350...if anything maybe a pinch less. The guy I was hunting with thought the same thing. I was a bit shocked when I got around to taping him a couple days after killing him. Officially gross scored 372 0/8 and net scored 358 5/8.
