LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-04 AT 02:47AM (MST)[p]I finallaly got my buck this year. I will probably not post any pictures though. It is only a big two point plus eye guards. Not much to brag about but he was really thick. But thought some of you might enjoy the info.
I have not hunted the Entiat much and had no idea where I was going. I just started driving and stopped at a likely looking spot and started walking (down hill). I walked down into a draw that had an open hillside on the north. The south side was thick timber but was all burned up with a lot of good bedding cover underneath. I was walking on the north side and looking into the timber.
I stopped once and sat down against a stump. I put my hood up because the wind was really howling. After a few minutes I heard a deer blow. I took my hood off and began looking around. It took me several minutes but I finally located a two point across from me, staring at me. He blew a couple more times then walked up the ridge.
I walked about 200 yards further down the draw and sat down against a log. I started glassing all around me. After 10 minutes of glassing I looked directly across from me into the timber and there was three deer standing there feeding. I think they must have just gotten out of their beds.
I saw that one was a buck and from the side he looked pretty good. I had already decided to take the first legal buck I saw since I only had one more day to hunt. When he turned his head I saw the eye guards and then Boom!
I got to him and lasered back to my position. It was 186 yds. He's not much to brag about but pretty good for a two point. He has a lot of mass and gnarly bases.
I gutted him and brought the front shoulders and head up to the top of the ridge. I was way down in a really nasty hole surrounded by blow downs. I called my brother-in-law and he responded with a friend to help me get him out.
To make a long story a little shorter..We hiked back out the ridge to get my deer and guess what was standing out in the open above my deer? Yep, you guessed it. A pretty nice four point with 3 does. We watched him until dark and then got mine out. He never looked at us and just fed around on the open hillside for about an hour.
I never saw another hunter hiking away from the roads. Everyone I saw was road hunting. I think there are alot of bucks in the area if you just get off the roads and hit those burned timber stands.
I posted this just in case someone is planning on hitting the Entiat before Friday. I was in the area of Crum Canyon. I plan on making this my new hunting camp spot.
Good luck to all who still have a tag.
