First Timberline Hike

I went for my first critter-looking timberline hike of the year with a client in his mountain goat area. We found some sheep down low, a lot of deer, elk and 18 goats up high. October can't get here quick enough for him.

At 11,500 feet it was still a bit chilly...

While my client nursed his bad knee and took a long rest I climbed the hill for some better pictures....

Awesome as usual Jeff.
Hope your clients knee is better by the time his hunt comes around;)
By the end of July we can all look forward to high country velvet that is more pronounced.
You are the man!
Best,
Jerry

Way cool shots Jeff! Very high quality shots! Great to see that new Panasonic FZ10 is picking right up, and then some, where the Oly UZ left off!

Great shots. I wish I had mountains to hike like that. I have hills, dry oat grass and our first 100 degree temps. 26 days to bow season though.

Nice pics!!! Somebody educate me. Is the goat on the bottom a nanny or billy? The horns look long, but are pretty thin. How do you tell the difference?

I'm no expert at telling the difference between billy and nanny. Generally the billys horns curve back in a uniform arc whereas the females horns usually turn curve back towards the tips. Also a billys horns are usually noticeable heavier at the bases.

I also am not an expert, but I do know that the World Record goat at one time was a Nanny. It ranked first for many decades.

Jeff:

Awesome photos....again. Beautiful high country and great wildlife. Makes me wish archery season was upon us.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-04 AT 10:41PM (MST)[p]Nice pictures! IF those sheep are in Andy's unit could you pass them on to him? DOes the 1 ram have radio transmitter on him? It seems a bit tight. Thanks for posting.
Jeff

Almost missed these Jeff. Great photos again, makes me wish I would have started applying for points years ago. Beautiful country to

DK,

Great pics as expected. That is awesome country. You said you saw "lots of deer" - but no pictures. Were those muleys too evasive for you the first time out?

Also, if that monstrous mountain is a hill in your terminology, I am in a world of hurt.

Keep them coming...........

Your the master of the Horn Porn. Can't wait to see more as the summer progresses. Keep up the good work!

ICMDEER,
He probably didn't take any pictures of the deer because they were just "dinks". Nice pictures Jeff!

Many more great pics, DK! Thanks for sharing. Once again, you da man! And that picture of the ice melt stream is a dandy! Almost like National Geographic stuff.......

BTW, how close were you to that goat when you were clickin away?

Thanks Roy. I'm just glad that work has slowed enough where I can check in here once in a while. So where are you hunting this year?
