The best is to flesh the cape, turn the ears, nose, eyes, etc., then salt it and let it dry. Before it gets hard, roll it up. Then store it in a dry area for as long as you want. If you have a cape that is tanned, it should be good for several years before you need to get it mounted. you can also wet it down, roll it up and store it in the freezer.
