Garth Carter's Top WY Antelope Units...

Just wondering if anyone who subscribes to Huntin Fool would be willing to share (pm if you prefer) Garth's Top WY Antelope Units.

I know that a lot of people will apply for units based solely off of his rankings, and I'm looking to avoid the "application spike" for his top few units. I've heard 60 and 61 are at the top of his rankings, but just wondering if that still applies this year.

Have been a long time Eastman's subscriber and would trade info, and have never subscribe to Huntin Fool.

Thanks,

Justin

Just look at the Boone and Crockets list of counties that the top end antelope come from and those will be the top 10 units. The top 10 won't be any different than any other year.

A clue is it really didn't change from last year and by looking at the units with the worst draw odds it will be easy to figure out where he suggests people apply.

>Top five in order 60,61,58,57,64

Which would be the top five units for a NR to stay away from, unless you have max points. And even then, you might have to wait a few years.

Funny part of all this is that the WY state record pronghorn was broken in 2008 on a unit with left over tags and was tied again in 2009 in a unit where some years you can draw that tag as a second choice.

Seems like these ratings and rankings from research services are waaaaay over rated. I get them all, and the best purpose they serve is to help people steer away from some units and find other places where they might actually stand a chance of drawing a tag every few years. I know guys who use these services for the purpose of learning which units to avoid, and they end up having 5 to 8 out of state tags a year.

"Hunt when you can - You're gonna' run out of health before you run out of money!"

I agree. I would rather hunt every few years, than wait for 10+ years to draw a tag.

Preciate the info btw.

If you apply in several different states like I do, why not put in for a top pick unit. If you draw you have a great tag if you don't pick up a left over.

Getting the unit correct per County listing may be a challenge but alot of these countys only have 1-2 huge units in them.

It's no secret that the "top picks" produce nice antelope and provide for a quality hunt because there are very few hunters. As the above post attests to, the huntin fools can claim little in the way of "inside information" when they recommend these areas. The fact is that, when you draw after many years of waiting, that 80" buck you are hoping to kill is going to be nearly as hard to find and kill as he is in an area that you can draw more frequently. IMO, one of the greatest things about drawing a highly coveted tag is that you are not bouncing around the hills with everyone and their brother, and the antelope aren't under as much pressure, and not because there is a booner goat behind every piece of sage.

Don't know about 1 - 2 or two area's. 33 of the 50 entries came out of Carbon/Natrona Counties. Those two counties have all or parts of almost 25 different area's in their boundries. I think the top two listed came from north of Casper. And I know of an 85 net that came from 73 a few years ago that wasn't on the list. Having drawn 61 two years in a row a couple years ago, I can certainly state there weren't many B&C bucks to be found. A severe winter later that year knocked the crap out of them. I drive to Rawlins several times a month and from what I've seen over the past year, I'd say they're not fully recovered...

Ive had three tags in 60 and its no better than most areas, in fact nowdays its probably not as good, because every non resident that draws hunts the crap out of it thinking they have the best area and knowing they will never draw it again. oh and its totally in Sweetwater county.

Youve been a long time Eastmans subscriber and need help from a Huntinfool member ? Sounds about right to me ........

>Pleasedear and Bigfin...your killing me here!

Whatcha talkin' about? :)

You're going to Wyoming antelope hunting this year, aren'tcha?

"Hunt when you can - You're gonna' run out of health before you run out of money!"

Personally, I wouldn't even consider a unit that isn't recommended by Garth. Those are about the only units in Wyoming worth your time and expense of a non-resident tag. Just be patient...you'll draw eventually. :)

i drew a 2nd choice last year and here he is all 79 inches of him

LAST EDITED ON Mar-09-10 AT 04:32PM (MST)[p]Ya Fin, I'll be hunting WY pronghorn this year..the where has yet to be determined tho...Heck, I can remember a time when my back up unit could be drawn on the 2nd or 3rd chioce..it takes a point now! yep...Eastmans AND carters list it as a "good chance unit" now, go figure.

I have new units in reserve, and some of these posts hit a little close to home for my comfort! oh well, wont be the first or the last time I went back to the drawing board!

Here is another secret . . .look at the units with a lot of private land. Make a few phone calls. I found quite a few landowners that allow you to hunt for a small fee ($100 per gun or bow. There are some nice bucks on these places and people just don't want to play the permission game. They are generally undersubscribed as well or you can draw them without any points.

It's always an adventure!!!

>anyone know how many subscribers Garth
>has nowdays?

Over 10,000. I think he listed the amount not too long ago in his editorial page.

I don't know where the big ones are in Wyoming, but I sure like to take their photos and hunt them with my bow when I can get a permit.

Have a good one. BB

Great pictures. I really like that buck in the second picture. Tall and narrow. Did his horns touch? How big do you think he was? He also has a big body on him.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-17-10 AT 10:19PM (MST)[p]Craig, He was about a 16" buck, quite heavy and his horns made a tight heart, but did not touch. My son ended up killing the buck in the 6th photo a couple years back and I took the one in the 5th photo. I wondered if my son's buck was the son of the buck you are talking about as it was in the same general area. He was very heavy horned, tall and narrow but not great prongs. Here's of photo of that buck after my son took him.

I took this photo last fall and one of these bucks was a pretty good buck and he made it through the season as this photo was taken a few days after the season ended. I put in for that unit and should draw this year hopefully. If I do I will go up and place a blind or two and take a few trips up and take some photos before the season opens. I get just about as much kick out of getting a good photo as I do taking a buck with my bow.
