Has anyone here ever hunted anything in Hawaii? Have a family vacation (Kauai) planned next summer and I'm trying to decide if it would be worth taking a bow or not. Looked at wild pig/goats and black tail deer. Sounds like you have to draw an Axis deer tag. Any info is appreciated

Best Take some Good Boots & an Oxygen Bottle!:D

I made a "pig sticker" custom knife for a hunter in Hawaii that hunted feral pigs on the big island every year. He was a bow hunter and wanted a knife with a long enough blade to stick the pig into the vitals to finish the kill if it was necessary for a humane reason.

That is all the information I can offer you.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-19 AT 09:01PM (MST)[p]I'd try to go out big game fishing as well if you can. Lots of opportunity in Hawaii. I saw wild turkeys on Oahu, not sure if those are around on Kaui. More importantly, can you hunt the roosters?

Bring a bag of corn, a couple gallons of peanut oil, and some ground crackers. That island is overrun with wild chickens! ?

?? so true!

My Advice: Take a break from hunting and have a good vacation, spending time with your family. Spend money and time somewhere else for hunting.

The helicopter tour of the island is an absolute must! It's one of the most diverse places you'll ever visit!

I've hunted Big island a bunch. Lots of public and year round. Heard good things about Kauai. Guides like everything else in the islands will be expensive. DIY works great on BI.Id get some regs, probably a few yrs old, call the office on the island, ask a few questions. Take your bow, rent a jeep, buy a 150$ license and get up early and hunt. Prob pigs and Billy goats. Sheep, deer prob on draw. Be back at the condo by noon for a drink and swim. Lots of game birds too in season.. ALOHA! Bh1

I lived there for a couple of years...Honolulu...bigger City but when you get out in the country the locals are super territorial and a Howlie (sp? white guy from mainland) won't be too welcome in my view stomping through "their" land The Aloha welcome is bull ##### except for the resorts and such my two cents

What he said x10....Especially on Kauai. Hawaiians aren't in love with mainlanders coming to their islands. They will spot you from a mile away. I lived there for 4 years, aloha is dead as far I'm concerned. If you're dead set on hunting the islands I'd hire a guide, do your homework and or make a Hawaiian connection to get you on some land that holds animals. The last thing you wanna do is find yourself lost on a piece of land and run into a few island boys. You'll learn the definition of "gettin cracks" real quick.

Better yet book the vacation with your family and spend it with them.
