I was out shooting doves tonight when my old faithful 870 wingmaster gave me problems. I stripped it down and found that the bottom 2 inches of the plug had split. The plug is the factory length but only half width on the bottom 2 inches. Once I removed the free floating piece all worked fine. do I need to replace it? If so can I cut a piece of dowling to fit or should I order a new factory one?

You can either cut a piece of dowel or simply use a no. 2 pencil. It, the pencil, has worked for me in the past on my 870's. Good luck.

I use a factory plug for my current 870, but in the past I have used a chunk of plastic clothes hanger cut to the right length.

I hesitate to use wood because it can hold moisture. I don't know if it would be enough to cause a rusting problem or not, but just to be safe I use plastic.

Since I posted I got on the Remington web page and ordered a new plug for a whopping 3 dollars. The rub of the deal is it cost 6 bucks to ship it! oh well thanks for the advice
