What do you guys recommend for the best way to hit a girl and not leave a mark? And I don't want to swell her eyes shut (again).

Last spring I bought Princess this new pup and the rod got spared and the child got spoiled.
Topaz is getting a bit slower and senile, and he's a might skittish of horns this year, I don't know why. Cody never finds me any under 85" and has yet to match up a pair in his 3 yrs. So I figures I gotta make this new girl into my new horn finder.
After all the Squirrel belly is getting bigger and his legs are getting wore down to mere nubbins from carrying it through that nasty sage.
Now after 25 yrs the Princess pretty much obeys voice commands with only an occasional "five across the eyes" as a reminder of who runs the nest in this here tree. Of course I use the open hand technique out of consideration for her age and brittle bone structure...
But this new pup is a regular pistol, no respect for the natural order of just who is in charge, even when employing the "clenched fist" technique that was so effective in the early years of my marriage.
I took her out and she gets this idea she is a bunny dog, I hadn't even picked up a horn yet so I had to use the b!tch slap and she just grinned at me. Then she got the idea she could make sage grouse an extinct species instead of just endangered. I had a horn by then so I starts to whacking her with it to teach her what we was out there for.
She's a lot faster than Topaz so I whacked him instead while she watched and got the feel for this new activity, I've always felt new dogs can learn a great deal from a mentor.
Well after a few more of these assertions of male dominion all three started to work a bit wide for my taste as I had to bend over and pick up everything, they were useless. Stupid worthless morons.
Finally when I was at about 15 fresh Topaz got tired of making me do all that work and he found 4-5, but not a mate to be had even after I used dryboot's non-typical-up-the-butt-and-twist training technique.

Overall a very disappointing day in the field... 20 fresh, but I cut my squirrel paw with a burr point while whacking them and left a blood trail all the way back to the truck. There was howling there was whining there was a LOT of huffing and puffing, and the dogs made some noises too.

Total for the new girl was one lousy #3, which Topaz ate while I was glassing, how is this going to work if she doesn't do what I tell her??? I invested a whole day for no discernible gain whatever.
